I want to replace Win 98 with XP, but many people tell me that I will have problems galore. Is this a big undertaking? Can anyone walk me thru it?

and chewing gum.
Do it. XP is more stable than 98 ever thought about being. It has more support, drivers, Wizards than you'll ever use. I waited until two years ago to convert. Bad idea. I now have two desktops and one laptop running XP Home. Best thing I ever did.
Easy to convert. Insert the disk and follow the prompts. The best solution is to convert to the NTFS file system and do a full format and install/upgrade. Be sure to backup/save your email addresses, folders, bookmarks, pictures, documents, etc.
Make sure your machine will accept the upgrade, visit the Microsoft site for a quick test of your system.
While I must comment that such trouble is not common, it does happen. Upgrade installs are a little more problematic that clean installs and anyone that doesn't backup what they can't lose prior to an OS install has no right to complain if it all goes away.
http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6121-0.html?forumID=45&threadID=24891&messageID=275376 is another divergent discussion that at the end found that we only lose what we didn't save elsewhere.
There is NO WALKTHOUGH since there are some billion PCs out there and I still find it amazing that XP does install for most without much ado on that diverse a collection of machines.
What many don't want to know are these items:
1. Microsoft doesn't save your data. You do that.
2. Microsoft doesn't supply drivers. They may not even identify the correct hardware. You get to collect drivers for video, audio, motherboard, BIOS updates and more.
3. You must be ready for a slower machine. This is a bigger OS and will not be comparable to 98.
4. In spite of #3, I'm not going back to DOS based Windows.
5. You don't want a XP CD without SP1 on it. The headaches and downloads are legendary.

Coryphaeous is right, you should do it. Don't even think of upgrading 98, just follow the prompts to format, and do a clean install of XP.

Hallo. This is normally no problem as win XP formats the disk as it installs itself. If your harddisk is 100% go ahead.Or go to madboot.com.You can download an easy to use windows start disk/floppy.Then you can format win98 and install XP New.
