The last ten techs we looked at failed a simple test. I handed them a solder iron and they grabbed the hot end. It looks like may can't solder anymore. Why is that?

I hope this is a bit of hyperbole. :-) If not, you and your company need to figure out why you are attracting the opposite of talent.

To the OP: from a job seeker's perspective, a key problem with tech job outlook right now is that many companies are scaling back hiring plans, some are laying folks off, and some are going out of business. From the employers perspective, high tech roles are increasingly specialized. You need to know where you fit in the tech world, and go seek out a good position doing something you enjoy (and are highly capable at).

I was at a panel discussion at school last year of various various folks in the online ad market, and one guy said... "Anything you students create will necessarily be new and complex. The easy stuff is already done."

As a job seeker, you have to work tirelessly. You have to constantly educate yourself in new technologies so that you at least appear to have a relevant skill set. Good fortune doesn't hurt either.

Fortunately loans aren't that important to this industry. Still nobodies gonna want to do much hiring or advertising... And same problem all around the world I'm in Sydney Australia.
