CD R/W Problems

by FredS - 10/10/08 8:29 PM

This post is similar to Songbird’s “CD Drive Trouble”, below, but I didn’t want to hijack his post and mine specifically concerns Read-Write disks..

I bought two, Verbatim R/W CDs the other day. Both were meant to save copies of a large, multi-chapter manual I had just revised. I burned the two CD copies of my manual files using Nero 5 on my Win98 (SE) machine.

But when I tried to change a few words in one chapter saved on the first CD, the CD would not open. Even after the green lamp on my CD-R/W stops blinking, no title of the R/W CD appears in my Windows Explorer menu. Also, when I double click on the D: drive icon, a pop message says “the drive is not ready”.

However, the second CD R/W I purchased *does* open. And I can open the chapter files on the CD. However, when I try to (re)save an open file the error message says:” Word cannot save or create this file. Make sure the disk you want to save this file on is not full, write protected or damaged”.

I don’t think the CDs are damaged. I bought both from a reputable office supply store. However, I have more than a few times had trouble with my CD R/W hardware in opening and working with CD R/W disks. Sometimes I have successfully burned CD R/W disks, but sometimes not.

Still, that the problem is (almost) intermittent makes it difficult for me to determine what is wrong with (1) the drive or (2) the disks.

I tried opening several CD-ROM Read Only disks this morning and they open okay, just like the second R/W disk I bought. I don’t have another CD-R/W in the house to test.

Any ideas how to repair what’s wrong or to even figure out what is causing my troubles with CD R/W disks?

Thanks.

What I ran into last week was...

New CDRW media is beyond 4X speed which an elder Windows 98se machine and it's combo of software and hardware "almost worked." I fished out some good older 4X media and the problem vanished for them except they wanted to know why it did that. Put as I was "on the clock" and the explanation would involve more than they would pay I just left it as "not compatible." Here you can google up why this is.

A Postscript Post

After my original post about my Nero CD burn problem, I kept searching the Net. I downloaded two free CD burn programs (UltraISO and PowerISO) that received good reviews for reliability. However, even using one of those programs, another CD I tried to burn wouldn't open. The error message from my D: drive again kept saying, "File Not Ready".

Then, last week, I had to burn a final CD as part of my almost-finished project. At the same time, I vaguely remembered something I'd read when I was still looking for a workaround. In one internet article, mention was made in passing that to ensure a good burn, files that were to be copied should always come off a hard drive. That is, when you list the files to copy in the Nero program, those files should reside on a hard drive.

For me the light went on: in my recent Nero burn attempts, the files I'd been trying to burn were coming off a flash drive. I realized that in the years of previous successful CD burns with Nero, the copied files resided on my hard drive - same as the Nero program does.

So this time I created a new hard drive folder and copied the project files from the flash drive. Then I burned the new CD, half expecting the thing to still not work. You can imagine my pleasure when the CD appeared on my D: drive and I could open all the burned files.

I haven't tried a CD burn since that last one worked to confirm this find, but it looks like having the files to copy on a hard drive (either the working computer's or, I suppose, an external HDD) makes a difference. Maybe this added info will help someone else later. Thnxs.
