HOW DO I COPY/MOVE DATA BETWEEN PCs?

by cpmdave - 10/30/08 6:50 AM

I have 3 computers: 2 desktops plus a laptop. All have WINDOWS XP. No Apples/Macs. They are not wireless or networked. How should I copy/move/transfer data/photos between them? Right now I use either flash sticks, CDs or DVDs. Is there a cord that I can connect them with that would do it? (They all have USB ports).
Thank you for any advice.

How Do They Connect To The Internet?

If you don't have a router and they're not connecting to the internet, then you're already using the easiest method available.. On the other hand, maybe you want to purchases a router.. If you've already got a router where all three plug into the internet connection, setting up a network should work the best.. Simply create a new admin user on each of the computers with EXACTLY the same username and password.. Then log in with the new username on each of the computers and create a new "Workgroup" in the "My Computer/Properties/Computer Name" section.. Once that's done, then "Share" a folder on one, or all of the computers so you can copy and paste between machines.

Hope this helps.

I'm an 80 year old "newbie" trying to make things as simple as possible. While waiting for an answer to my question, I googled PC TO PC, and got info on a "USB Directlink PC to PC data transfer cable". It sounds like what I need. It's less than $20 and I'm thinking of trying it. Do you think it would work?
Again, thanks for your time and answer.
(To answer your question: only one of my desktops is connected to the internet. I am trying to keep the others completely free from viruses, spyware, etc.)

Yes, The USB DirectLink Will Do What You Want..

It will take a little setup but the instructions and software given should allow you to get things up a running.. As long as you don't have to transfer files very often, which would require you to switch the cable from computer to computer, to computer, then it should be fine..

If you ever want to move up to sharing constantly, consider the router option I suggested earlier.

Keep up the good work.

Hope this helps.

hope I'm not too late.

Had the same problem.
For me was best buying a network router. It's a permenant connector, (external Hard drives hook in and so do wireless transmitters I understand), and it serves many other functions.
All computers are then able to be hooked up and online.
Instructions are given at the computers open a network function. Under my network icon ask to open a network. Follow instructions on the router instructions and the directions you're given. It establishes permenant inter computer hook ups and multiple internet use. Many ISP don't allow more than two computers on the same link at a time without paying extra. I've to get to the problem of 3 when I've three computers I guess.
There is a utility called briefcase that automatically updats, to synchronize files in say a notebook and a desktop. Read the computers instructions in the help section under 'briefcase' or 'synch files', I believe.
I couldn't work the PC to PC ethernet connection setup.

Set up a home or small office network when you open the my networks icon. I said a new network place I'm sorry I was off the top.
There is an option in the right click toolbar properties that will put the Networks icon on the desktop. Open start menu tab click customize then advanced. Checking the 'my network places' places an icon in the start menu. Click that to open it.

the cheapest and easiest way...

by COCA-COLA KID - 10/31/08 6:56 PM In reply to: HOW DO I COPY/MOVE DATA BETWEEN PCs? by cpmdave

The cheapest way to do it would be to buy a USB flash drive and drag and drop the files into the flash drive then take them to the pc you want to share the files with...A 1 GB flash drive is about $15.00...
