Don't know for sure this is a Vista issue, but I can't print PDFs from my wife's laptop. I can print them from my computer (with XP) fine. She can print all other doc types, but when attempting to print PSDFs, we get a message box saying "print to a file" and asking for "the outgoing filename". Regardless of what you type in there, there will be a progress bar for a few seconds, it will max out, then nothing -- and not a stir from the printer. So is this her printer rejecting PDFs or Vista acting funny? We have the latest version of Acrobat Reader installed.

It sounds as if the job is being sent to a virtual printer, a program which acts like a printer in order to print to some other file/device. (Microsoft Office includes an XPS virtual printer while others are available for download.) Check the selected printer and make sure it matches that set on the XP system.

Thanks for getting back. My wife's laptop actually does have lots of extra printers listed, some of them virtual. However, I keep selecting the correct one (the one that's physically connected and prints other docs) and I have checked that it's the default printer, but I still get the message box. Is it possible that somehow one of those virtual printers has been marked as the default printer only for PDF files?
Did you open Acrobat and then the document and then it's File, Printer setup?
http://www.acrobatusers.com/forums/aucbb/viewtopic.php?id=7542 is interesting. It appears this does happen!

Whether I just click on the PDF file or open Acrobat and then open the file, the same thing happens. I took a look at that link... seems like they were having different problems. My default printer doesn't jump, and I can print all other docs fine. It's only when I have a PDF open and want to print it that this dialog comes up. I can't find anything in the printing preferences in Acrobat that would change this. I'm going to try all the different printers my wife's computer lists and see if I can find anything like "set as pretermined printer for PDF files." Any other ideas?

Which is exactly what is being discussed at the supplied link. Sometimes you gotta wonder about such software titles. Call Adobe and ask if they have a fix as I know about the issue but know to select the printer or close the PDF first.
