Mp3 Player/Phone

by marcelomdsc - 10/20/08 5:16 AM

Hello, both my iPod and my phone stopped working recently, so I´m in the market for a new phone that can replace both.
I know the iPhone is one of the best options but I would like to know about other, maybe cheaper options.

I used to own the Nokia 5300 Xpress Music, which had a nice mp3 player but not quite good enough.

I am in Uruguay, south america, so some of these phones might not be available, but we do have iPhones, so I´m guessing we have most of them.

Thanks.

I suggest the Blackberry Pearl. The MP3 player is great and the phone is nice and you can get a 6GB card. That's a lot of music. Then you can use the speakers or the corded headset.

It's a wonderful, powerful and compact option. That is, if you don't mind paying for the Blackberry data package. I don't know if it's available for you though. If it is, I'd consider that.

I´ll keep that in mind, specially for the 6gb option, though i dont really need or like smart phones.
2 of the phones i´ve seen are close to what i want are the Nokia 5610 Xpress Music which is pretty ugly and the one i really like is the Sony Ericsson W760i, but I would love to know if anyone has had any experience with these.

thanks.

I'd check Hofo for comments on that phone

By the way, I should have told you that I kept my iPod, nothing is easier than that. No smartphone, no nothing. I love my Nano and I wouldn't give it up for any phone.

iPhone

I've had my iPhone 3G nearly three months now. Before this I used an iPod Classic 160 and a pre-paid phone that cost me around $15/month (I don't make many calls).

Though I enjoy the iPhone's ability to access email, internet, etc., I think I still prefer the traditional iPod when it comes to music (especially now that the newest iPods can make use of the clicker controls on the Apple earphones). For the most part, I still carry the iPod out and about.

To be honest, I rarely use the iPhone for music or video. The main reasons are:
1) I'm usually using it for web/phone calls,
2) The rest of the time is spent trying to conserve battery power,
3) Unless you use the included earphones (which don't sound that good), there's no way to play/pause/ffw/rwd without looking at the screen.

Apple made a big mistake creating such a versatile and useful phone with a non-removable battery, particulary since internal design changes have made it incompatible with most third party iPod chargers/battery packs.

If you don't need much storage space, the iPhone may be a good replacement for both your phone and iPod. Just check the reputation of the carrier. An iPhone with a crappy carrier becomes an iPod Touch with a monthly bill.

Here in the U.S. I'm extremely disappointed in AT&T. Their 3G coverage is almost non-existent (even in places where they claim it should be plentiful), and their EDGE network is like being back on dial-up.
