I have got a Sony vaio a115z laptop/notebook running windows xp sp3.
I wish to upgrade my hard drive from 2 30gb hard disks (total of 60gb) to a hard disk roughly 80-120 GB in size.
I have no idea what physical size to get e.g a 1 inch one, a 2.5 or 3.5 inch one.
Can anyone help?
What version of the XP CD you have. If it's "XP" then the drive size limit is 127GB to avoid trouble.
I didn't research what size hard disk this model takes. You must take ownership of your machine to do such research so no one misleads you.

If I am not mistaken, the Vaio A series laptop you are mentioning has 1 2.5" IDE hard disk drive divided into 2 partitions (30GB each).
Probably about 90% of laptops use a 2.5" HDD. If yours is a 15.4" screen, I'm pretty sure it's a 2.5" hdd.
You should make sure to purchase an IDE drive (not SATA) and one that's 5400rpm for best price/performance.
For $65 you can get a 160GB one:

If your laptop isn't too old, I'd figure it would work. At the worst case, your latop won't recognize the drive properly which you should return for a different one. But I'm pretty sure it'll work.
I just bought one for my ThinkPad.
