My daughter's keyboard is not working. I can only log in using the guest account, no password. I tried flashing the bios as administrator(copy and paste from wordpad) but that did NOT solve the issue.
Maybe drivers need updated? Which ones from here?
I inserted a Knoppix CD and the keyboard doesn't work with that neither.
Any suggestions?

So it works with the guest account? If so, try the create a new account and test that account.
Bob
for the guest account, either. I made a wordpad Document with the administrator account and password so I tried copy and paste to flash the bios, but that didn't help.
I removed her files and folders and I'm in the process of re-installing the Operating System, with some hope it will work again.
I'll let you know.

The most common issue that causes this is Logitech drivers. Here's an article which has a XP version somewhere but the issue plagues XP too.

but I don't think it does. The touchpad works fine. It's the whole keyboard, so without the keyboard, I couldn't even boot into the safe mode.
We use Avast(Free Edition). Do you think some type of spyware could have done this? Unknown where the daughter surf to but I do know she cannot turn the virus protection off, I have it password protected.
I'm still patiently waiting for the installation to finish to see what the results are.

Has been one I've found helpful to remove when this happens. I rarely do the forensics but you're right that malware could do such but most malware won't because that would defeat what most malware is trying to do.
The problem as I see it is that fixing this requires using a boot disk, command line skills or a parallel install. I've had some luck using the registry editor on the NTPASSWD CD. But that's too rough for most to use.
Bob
It's worth a try.
Hope this helps.

This will not fix your keyboard, but it may help you access your files and retrieve them safely...
My keyboard started malfunctioning last week, along with the lcd display (not sure if they are related). I had to use the on-screen keyboard feature of Vista in order to log on. The featureis activated via an icon on the lower left portion of the Vista logon screen which, when clicked, will bring up a menu of accessibility options. Select the one that says "type without using the keyboard" an hit OK. The On-Screen Keyboard will pop up and display a visual keyboard with all the standard keys. You can select keys using the mouse or another pointing device.
There are many posts on their website that have the same problem. My wife called them and the ONLY want $400 to repair it. You know what they can do there. HP is just getting a bad reputation for the failed keyboard problems they have that they don't want to fix.

Extend warranty. Wait.... then call it in.
Took it to the local HP dealer and we'll see what they give for an estimate.
Thanks, everyone for your help.

there is an ease of access button at startup kindof looks like a light blue recycling symbol it has onscreen keyboard that u use with your mouse or touchpad i am using mine right now . max
Wife took the laptop to the repair shop. They installed a new keyboard and it didn't work. She purchased a flexible USB keyboard that would sit on top of the old one.
Had trouble with the operating system. Virus protection said there was a virus in the memory. Had the virus protection remove the virus.
Restarted the computer and still had problems. Did a clean installation using the disks I have. I was trying to log in to my email account using the webserver and was having trouble. I was typing too many characters. Found out the NEW keyboard was working.
I kept the old keyboard and now have a flexible keyboard in case of emergency.
Laptop updated with XP SP3 and everything works again.
