How Old?

by 1AlexH1 - 10/18/08 12:16 PM In reply to: Mac G4 and Gateway PC Laptop - both over 5 years old by bagthepi

What is remarkable is that as we all learn more about the technology, we become more able to manage what we have, rather than immediately say, "I gotta get new stuff!"

And be it a MAC or a Windows machine, we all are indeed learning more - thanks to fora like this and other locations, in which we can share information, ideas, suggestions, and the like.

Folks, without the trumpets, we have walked quietly into the information age, and it's a nice place to be. We can relax, sit and learn from others, teach if we want to and are qualified to do so ...

So, my thanks to all from whom I am learning - and I've been working with PCs since 1985 and computers since ... well, I don't want to give away how old I really am <BG>!

The Info Age is actually a nice place to spend some time, no?

Latest desktop computer

by Doh_1 - 10/18/08 1:38 PM In reply to: Poll: How old is your current main computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had an older Dell as our second computer. Since my wife was starting a college course, I wanted her to be able to use our faster, newer computer, but also was working at home using it. So we decided that we should get a newer computer a couple of months ago and retire the older Dell. Since I buy a computer to last a few years, I usually pay a little more ($1100) to get something that will last a little longer. This time:

Dell XPS-420
Q9450 2.66GHz. quad-core processor (12Mb. of cache), FSB 1.33GHz.
Memory 3Gb. 800MHz. DDR.
320Gb. SATA hard drive

This desktop works great with Windows Vista, and I'm very happy with it. I think that it has enough horsepower to feel fast for at least a couple of years.

6+ years

I have a Mac G4 desktop (the model's called Sawtooth) running OS 10.4.11. It could be six, seven or eight years old. I just have been too busy enjoying it to remember when we first became acquainted.

Sort of poky, but I don't care. It does what I want it to do, and if I wanted to make a change, I could. I also have my old monochrome laser printer, which pre-dates the computer, going back to the old PowerPC days (I had a 7100) and OS 7.

Windows Me

by John_Locke77 - 10/18/08 3:40 PM In reply to: Poll: How old is your current main computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I don't know exactly how old it is, because my aunt gave it to me when she bought a new computer.

It's an HP Pavilion, with a Pentium III processor, and 127MB of RAM.

One thing I don't like about it is: Every time I restart it, (which is a few times a week,) it puts an Outlook Express shortcut on the desktop. (This annoys me because I don't use Outlook Express, and I heve to delete it again.)

In my original post, I forgot to mention…

by John_Locke77 - 10/20/08 2:33 PM In reply to: Windows Me by John_Locke77

For me, it's about 1-1/2 years old. But, because it has Windows Me installed, (and I'm not the original owner,) I'm guessing it's about 8 years old.

I have a Dell Dimension 8100, P4,1.3 GHz., 60 gig HD, beautiful 19"
monitor. It came with Windows ME(horrible), and 128 MB of memory. I added XP and more memory(512 MB). Oh, it also came with a modem because I had dial-up access at first. I keep it clean and tuned up and it serves me well.

How Old Is My Computer

by JCipo - 10/18/08 6:25 PM In reply to: Poll: How old is your current main computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have found that a difference of one year is like day and night with both computers using Vista. My old more expensive unit took forever to start up or shut down. The new cheaper one is very quick. The best thing is I had to jump thru hoops to run my old programs on the older computer but the newer one runs these programs without a problem. Years ago, when a computer cost thousands of dollars, it was expensive to upgrade. Now adays, $500 can get you a pretty good machine. If you are a gamer and need a better machine. There are a number of places who will build a super one for you for a $1000 that will last a good long time.

Current main computer

by atm4940 - 10/18/08 8:22 PM In reply to: Poll: How old is your current main computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My main computer is a two-year-old Toshiba laptop. It's my fourth personal computer since the early 1990's. The Toshiba was an inexpensive little laptop, but has proven to be extremely fast, with an incredible memory capacity. I have a secondary laptop, an eight-year-old Gateway, that still works remarkably well.

3 year old brown box

by back_water_tech - 10/18/08 10:39 PM In reply to: Poll: How old is your current main computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I love playing with this stuff.

I built many PC's and this one is just another in a long line.

It is starting to show its age, however. :p

By today's standards, it is out right old, but the games I play are about as old as it is. ;) And honestly, for web or office applications, it is just fine (as it was three years ago when I built it.)

Im dreaming of a new dual core system for Christmas. LOL

My pc is 18 months old

by lynjs - 10/18/08 11:28 PM In reply to: Poll: How old is your current main computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My pc is 18 months old. Even though I hate HP, that is what I have. I know some are asking why did you buy it? Well, that's the catch. I didn't. When someone is buying you something, you take it, even if you don't want or like it. If it had been my money, I would have bought a Sony.

The pc in question is a custom a1750y series HP 3 gig using Vista. Prior to that, I was on another HP, that was purchased in 1999, the 6746C 733-MHZ using Windows Me.

I basically skipped over the XP thing where folk preferred it to Vista. I prefer Windows 98 to all other OS, even though Vista is just fine to me.

I have a Gateway Laptop running Win 98SE with a 20 GB hard drive and 160 MB Ram works good, runs good, no problems But in order to do income tax online this year I had to upgrade and buy a new computer. So I got a HP Pavillion dv9000 which is a media centre PC and also a TV with 4 GB Ram and a 350 GB hard drive. So I use both.
