Oldie but Goodie...

by jrdinger - 10/18/08 8:51 AM In reply to: Poll: How old is your current main computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Im still running a heavily worked over G4 Digital Audio Mac. Upgraded to Radeon 9800 pro, new drive controller and two 80 gig drives, maxed out RAM to 2.5 gigs; as well as a 2 X 2 Ghz G4 upgrade card.

I dont game on this machine, so my needs are not spectacular. I love this machine and it has been worth every penny!

2½ years old, albeit mega upgraded

by TrackStar1682 - 10/18/08 9:30 AM In reply to: Poll: How old is your current main computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have an Alienware Area-51 3500 that I got back in 2006, although it's taken so many upgrades it's practically not the same machine.

As of now, it houses a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R motherboard, Intel Core2 Duo E8400, 4 GB of DDR2-800 Crucial Ballistix Tracer RAM, Gigabyte GeForce 8600GT graphics card, 2x 80 GB Hard Drives, DVD RW drive, LG Blu-ray and HD-DVD drive. I use a 500 GB external drive for all my "stuff" so if I have problems, reformatting is easy, although I'm highly sick of it and probably won't do so again for a while.

Main computer is a 2 month old Toshiba

by Ardy Mattox` - 10/18/08 9:35 AM In reply to: Poll: How old is your current main computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have a Toshiba laptop, 4 gigs ram and 320 gig hard drive. It has dual 2 core, so is fairly speedy even with Vista. I've had no trouble with computer, but sure have had trouble with Vista.

Pretty much love the laptop.

Also have (business requires extras) an HP laptop about 2 years old, which has had some repair problems, and an older Fujitsu that I've never had a problem with. Both of them have XP. Both are laptops. I travel, so need portability.

Poll: How old is your current main computer?

by MrGeek2U - 10/18/08 9:57 AM In reply to: Poll: How old is your current main computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My computer is a glorious 5 years old. AMD Athlon XP at 1.83 Ghz with
1 GB ram, 2 320GB HDD, Pioneer DVD burner and LG dvd/CD-RW, and yes, it has a 3.5" Floppy.
So far it's been a great unit, both for experimenting and everyday computing.
I don't beleive it is a matter of how old the computer is.. it is a matter of will the computer still do what you need it to with a reasonable speed and accuracy. I have large drives because I do a lot of photo and video, and the machine was built from ordered parts and I have not had any problems ( that I didn't cause myself).
The computer industry is full of hype about Bigger , Better, Faster.
If they didn't, they wouldn't be in business for long.
If it works - Don't fix it, and don't replace it... unless you really need to. And if you look hard enough, you caan still find parts for the older machines.

How old is a PC in DOG years? Or Cat Years?

by 1AlexH1 - 10/18/08 10:13 AM In reply to: Poll: How old is your current main computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My main desktop is an HP Pavilion which I bought in December of 2001. I just this week upgraded it to 2 GB RAM and it's leaping around like an Olympic jumper!

A Great machine, it seems to not be showing its age. 2.4 GHz P4, with 2 GB RAM, an 80 GB HD, a CD/DVD RW (Burner) and all other stuff seems to have been brandy new, even though it is not. It works like a charm.

My laptop is less than a year, and it runs Vista SP1 like a new-born, no problems, it's an Acer 5920 Aspire, and is a joy to use. Alas, I picked up a Trojan and am going to rebuild it but that will take me all of an afternoon and it will be back in business.

They're truly making better machines these days, and thanks to that, it is easier to deal with problems than it ever used to be.

So, the 7 year old HP Desktop Pavilion, and the > 1 yea old Acer Aspire laptop, and I couldn't be happier with my hardware.

(Once more, please forgive any glaring spelling errors ...).

Mac G4 and Gateway PC Laptop - both over 5 years old

by bagthepi - 10/18/08 11:29 AM In reply to: Poll: How old is your current main computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My MAC G4 is my primary desktop which I bought in 2001. (It replaced a MAC Performa which I had for well over 5 years.) Runs like a top; upgraded OS to Leopard. Will eventually replace it with MAC PRO laptop.

Bought my Gateway M500 6/03. Have never had a problem with it. Upgraded the CD-RW to DVD-RW last year and added RAM. Other than that, I've done nothing to the hardware. Still runs well. Only bought the PC because I needed portability + MSN to keep my clients happy. Now that a MAC can do both, I'll be upgrading to the MAC laptop next year.
