XP, Vista, OS, PC, operatring systems, start up drivers,

by Ralph60 - 12/14/08 7:13 PM In reply to: apcmag tutorial very good by rich_jtg

Do You Know what I think about sll the upgrades etc. that keep changing what we are just getting used to? All we are doing is buying into more and more of less and less. The more we upgrade to a newer OS the less programs we can run that we are used to. We then have to either get upgrades in our wordprocessors, Dbase, Spread Sheets, and related or buy newer versions. We just barely get to used them when they are already out of date. All the games we played are now out of date except the ones I keep solitare and a few odd games where you have to use little skill. If you wish to keep up-to-date in games you constantly have to buy newer versions or just try the trailers or demos out and delete becuse they are no longer worth buying. Its the same with web design. I finished mine in 2006 and by the time I was through the course I was two years behind and the course took only six months and I cannot catch up. OS are running our lives so just say enough to all of it and say no more new ones for ten years and the same goes for all other programs we use today. Just say No! We all want to actually get something for the hard earned money we spent so tell MS and all others we have had enough!

dual boot

by angler1 - 10/18/08 2:44 AM In reply to: How do I dual boot my computer to run Windows XP and Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

i had a 80 gig hard drive, with a partition to split it into 40/40 then installed xp on 1 side and vista on the other half, it does work and just gives you a choice to which operating system you want on start up. if you want to change system when on comp, just restart and choose the other operating system. does not interfere with updates ect: all worked well for me, but alas went back to the old favorite 'xp', to many issues with vista at the time. hope this helps .

Trying Vista on an old computer

by waytron - 10/18/08 3:21 AM In reply to: How do I dual boot my computer to run Windows XP and Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Unfortunately, you did not give us any specifications on your current computer making it very difficult to determine if it will even support Windows Vista or it may support it but be greatly underpowered and result in very poor performance. Unless you have plenty of extra disk space, at least 1-2gig of ram and a decent discrete video card, it is probably not worth installing. You might want to just hang out and wait for Windows 7 and purchase a new computer at that time. If you really want to try Vista, download the Windows Vista Advisor from the Microsoft website to check for system compatibility before attempting to install Windows Vista at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx also check the website of the manufacturer of your computer for Vista upgrade information and new Vista drivers for your specific model. If you still want to go ahead and install Windows Vista and your computer meets the requirements I would recommend probably avoiding trying to setup a dual booting system. It is not that it can’t be done, but it is rather complicated and prone to many problems. They best scenario is to go out and purchase yourself a second hard drive (you can get a new drive for under $50) and install Vista on that. You can play with that for as long as you want and then slip the XP disk back in when you get tired of it or decide that Vista is not for you or when you find that you can’t get it working or discover that some of your older peripherals or software will work with Vista.

How to boot a computer to run Windows Vista and Windows XP.

by STAROCK113 - 10/18/08 3:27 AM In reply to: How do I dual boot my computer to run Windows XP and Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

If you already have Vista installed on your PC computer, internal hard drive, you can get an external hard drive and connect it to a USB 2.0 port. Then start up the computer. When it detects the new hardware (EXTERNAL Hard Drive) it will ask if you want to boot from this new hard drive instead of the internal one. Click OK then install Windows XP-Pro on the External hard drive from XP Discs. If it installs on the External Drive then you will have two different operating systems on one computer. When you want to start Vista, just press the power button on, and Vista will start. You will then have access to that(c:)drive with all of it's programs in Vista. When you want to work only in XP-Pro, plug in the External drive into the USB 2.0 port then turn on the computer. You should boot to a completely different operating system on a seperate hard drive.***OR*** If you already have a hard drive with XP-Pro OS installed on it you could put that hard disc in an external drive case and use it that way as a External XP-Pro hard drive to boot from. Then if you have Vista OS installed on the computers internal drive then maybe you can run both seperately, depending on the computer manufacturer. But again, maybe neither methods will work! It's just a theory and I've never actually put into use, so be careful!

Win XP and Vista on same computer

by outlook3146 - 10/18/08 5:08 AM In reply to: How do I dual boot my computer to run Windows XP and Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

If you want to run a dual system on the same computer you cannot run any other system while you have Vista installed. But you Can have WinXP and WinXP Pro for example which will be compatible. I have tried many times to get Vista to run with winxp and it was never compatible, always end up with the computer crashing. I hope this would help as it has been my experience. You can partition one drive and have two systems running as I do or have two separate drives for your two systems so long as it is Winxp and Winxp Pro.

Running dual operating systems

by axe10x - 10/18/08 5:35 AM In reply to: How do I dual boot my computer to run Windows XP and Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I,m not entirely shure this will work, but it seems logical.
Install a second hard drive and run the windows vista program on it.

Vista v XP

by jonboy_yahoo.com - 10/18/08 5:41 AM In reply to: How do I dual boot my computer to run Windows XP and Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

This is interesting as I recently purchased anew laptop which had Vista as the op system.

However when I tried to load and number of my programs I found that they would not run on Vista. These were not obscure programs for example Adobe Photoshop was one of them.

I therefore immediately to blister of my laptop and installed my copy of Windows XP pro.

I also find that some of the security issues on Vista did not allow me to do things that I ordinarily wanted to do. They were not illegal just not able to be handled by Vista's complex security systems.

Now I too might be interested in running a dual system just to be able to get used to this day because I'm sure I won't be able to use XP pro for ever due to Microsoft's stupid policy of doing their best to advance and promote this throw-away society instead of making products that are equal friendly and can be used for many years into the future.

XP vs. Vista: Don't Knock Yourself Out

by jwd136d - 10/18/08 6:07 AM In reply to: How do I dual boot my computer to run Windows XP and Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I run two computers on my desk. The operating system is whatever the box came with. Currently one is XP-Home and the other is Vista-Home Premium. After 16 months side by side, my view is the difference is no more profound than one speaks yankee and the other speaks southernese. For that, you don't need Rosetta Stone. I would not spend a dime or a dime of effort to "upgrade" either one. All of the palaver only sells magazines and keeps newsletter editors off breadlines. - Jim D.

move from XP to dual boot XP & Vista

by Jim Johnson - 10/18/08 6:29 AM In reply to: How do I dual boot my computer to run Windows XP and Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

First things first. Download and run Microsoft's Vista upgrade advisor tool (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx). The fact is that many systems manufactured before Vista was released are not good candidates for running Vista. And in some cases by the time you tally the hardware upgrades, you are better off buying a new system with Vista pre-installed.

Now if you are ready to take the plunge, insert the Vista DVD and run the installation. One of the installation options given to you is to create a dual-boot XP/Vista setup. Just respond to Vista's questions about how you want it to work for you.

Xp or Vista

by jonboy_yahoo.com - 10/18/08 9:13 AM In reply to: move from XP to dual boot XP & Vista by Jim Johnson

I thank you for this useful information however I do have one more question.

As I said I just deleted the Vista from the new laptop which did not come with a Vista installation CD. What I need to know is how to download a copy of Vista because I have no intention of paying Microsoft price for something that I have already purchased. I believe I should have being given the CD when I purchased the laptop but was advised that Microsoft no longer do this.

Why?

by psychomichael - 10/18/08 6:45 AM In reply to: How do I dual boot my computer to run Windows XP and Vista? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

There are many good dual boot programs out there. The first place I would look is www.ubuntuforums.org

You can find several different options there.

My question to you is "why would you WANT to use both XP & Vista?" Chances are if your computer is native to XP, you're going to have problems upgrading to Vista. This is because Vista is geared towards higher memory capable computers and you might find that it's easier to buy a new computer (which is Microsoft's goal) than to upgrade everything to support Vista.

My advice would be to try one of the many flavors of Linux as a dual boot. You will still get the familiarity of XP for certain programs and you'll get to try an operating system that actually works. I have been recommending Ubuntu, but if you're wanting something that resembles Windows more you can check out Mandriva or Kubuntu.

In my opinion, that would make better use of a dual boot situation that you're describing than dual booting two operating systems that will probably end up making your computer run worse in the long run.

Xp & Vista

by jonboy_yahoo.com - 10/18/08 9:23 AM In reply to: Why? by psychomichael

Thank you for this but since the Laptop had Vista on it when bought as new it should not be a problem..

Now that so many have replied on how to install it I just need to know where I can get a replacement copy of the Vista op system as I have no CD and will not pay microsoft again for what I already purchased. Thanks.

I'd like to tell you, but...

by psychomichael - 10/19/08 11:10 AM In reply to: Xp & Vista by jonboy_yahoo.com

hehehe...the answer that I originally gave apparently offended someone. You cannot legally obtain another copy of Vista even if it came with your computer and you reformatted to XP.

...there ARE many other ways to obtain it, though. You'll have to figure that out on your own since c-net doesn't want me to put it on here.
