No, the irony is not lost on me that this was announced on the Vista blog, lol.

Vista-7

Since it's keeping all the problimatic parts of Vista they should just call it Vista-7.

I'm hard pressed to see how they are fixing anything. Besides they should fix Vista if they want any credibility. Vista isn't like me where they just dropped it for being crap. They are staking their future on it. They should fix it.

Yep but Microsoft doesn't realize it isn't really Windows 7 at all I think it is windows 9 or 10 because we need to look at Windows NT and Windows 2000 also the Windows Server so interesting but it isn't really Windows7 at all. But it is better than ME or Vista as Natalie said on C-Net Loaded.

Windows XP is #7.....

by Magishine - 10/14/08 8:12 PM In reply to: It's official: Next Windows version will be "Windows 7" by wizkids32

...by my count.

Win95 = 4
Win98 = 5
WinME = 6
WinXP = 7
Vista = 8
Win7 = 9

Even if you take ME, which had the shortest lifespan, out of the mix, the numbering is still wrong.

Where did they even get the idea to call it Windows 7 anyway?

No that's wrong

by Nicholas Buenk - 10/14/08 8:19 PM In reply to: Windows XP is #7..... by Magishine

According to the Microsoft versioning in the about boxes.
Windows 9x/NT4 = 4
Windows 2000 = 5
Windows XP = 5.1
Vista = 6

It is the seventh desktop NT

by its_a_paddlin - 10/18/08 1:38 AM In reply to: Windows XP is #7..... by Magishine

As in my post on the Vista blog...

Windows 7 is the 7th major version in the desktop NT line.

Windows NT 3.1 was the first NT version to match the original Windows line (which included Windows 9x).

Second was: Windows NT 3.5

Third: Windows NT 4.0

Fourth: Windows 2000 (5.0)

Fifth: Windows XP (5.1)

Sixth: Windows Vista (6.0)

And finally seventh: Windows 7

With counts having each 9x version, why not include 98SE or various OSR versions of 95? Besides, XP and up are NT based, not really a continuation of the 9x line.

Is my sound out again? @#&$!

And I was just talking about the merits of Vista, figures. ;\

I think it's just...

by davviau - 10/19/08 9:35 PM In reply to: It's official: Next Windows version will be "Windows 7" by Slikkster

...Microsoft trying to be Apple again.

MacOS 10 (OSX)
Windows 7

They're just trying to be simple. Funny that everyone is confused at how they got 7 though. I wonder if they'll try and nickname it like 'Tiger' or 'Leopard'.

It's the other way around

by its_a_paddlin - 10/19/08 10:36 PM In reply to: I think it's just... by davviau

MS-DOS 6.22
Windows 3.11
Windows 286 2.1

MacOS 10 (OSX)
System 7

Microsoft already has a long history of using version numbers in naming, it's nothing new.

I dont care if they call it FooFooCuddlyPoops!

by Buick107 - 10/20/08 12:31 PM In reply to: It's the other way around by its_a_paddlin

I want new core code, lean, mean, and fast. The windows OS has been rehashing the same stuff in a heavier slower package for 10 years! They say they are planning for future hardware but they are the ones pushing the consumer to get new hardware! Show me something that runs faster than XP or Vista on a computer available today!

could be worse

Well, at least it's not some fancy words...
