I have a Dell Dimension E520, a Dell Dimension E310 and a Dell Inspiron 1525 all networked and they share a Brother DCP 7020 Laser Printer. Desktops run WinXP, Laptop runs Win Vista.
NOW I want to add to the mix a Gateway 500 that I have set up in the basement, running Win 98. This one is for the great grandkids. Mostly for kids games.
Bob...can I use the Motorola WE800g, Wireless 802.11g Ethernet bridge that I saw mentioned in one of your old posts?
I bought a Compaq 11mbps Wireless USB adapter but I couldn't get it completely set up and after three attempts to get help , I'm going to send it back.
The WGPS606 and similar devices work for Windows 98 and prior because of how it looks to 98 just like a wired connection to your LAN. Sharing from Vista to Windows 98 would be interesting to hear if anyone makes that work.
Bob
?
Great! Then I'm gonna go out and buy one and install it! I'm not messin' with my laptop that has Vista though. It's networked and working fine. :o) I'll keep you posted and thanks so much for your reply.
I setup the 606 on a Windows 2000 desktop (XP is fine too) but after that the Linux, Windows 95 machines could use the ethernet ports on the 606. I do not know if the setup software runs on Windows 98.
In closing I paid 29 bucks for the second refurb 606 at geeks.com. I see others out there marked as refurb. Mine looked new. My bet is that the paltry instructions caused the units to be returned.
Bob
That well could have been the reason. But I would think that there isn't that much to it , plus I'm sure that instruction could be had somewhere.
The first one I was telling you about was refurbished also. I just couldn't get any one to help.
I emailed Motorola for the price of the WE800g. We'll see if I get an answer. And I also went to the Geeks site for the WGPS606 and it's unavailable at this time but they will email me when it becomes available. That's ok since there is no big rush to get this puppy hooked up.
I'd recommend going wit theNetgear prt54g wirless dapters.
Thanks Bob and Seahawk/
Bob maybe I mislead you some. I don't care if this Win 98 pc can use the printer or not, the little people don't need to print. The other pc's are already connected to the Brother printer. And I found an AirLink 101 and am trying to install that now. I must be doing something wrong cause I can only get about halfway through that one as well and it stalls. lolol AND the phone number on the instructions are isn't working and the phone number on the web site (same) isn't working either. lolol Maybe I'll just forget it. Thanks anyway guys.
Hey, Bob,
Just to let you know I finally have the Gateway running Win 98 up and running and on the internet. Using the AirLink 101. Short of throwing it out the window I did have to call them to help me. They did help and now it's online. For an old machine it runs like a top. Thanks for all your help. And my great grand kids thank you as well. :o)
There are people who still use WIN 98? Maybe I shouldn't have thrown all those WIN 95 copies out?
lolol Must be you didn't go far enough back in the posts.
The Win 98 is in the basement. Set up for three great grand daughters!
Why? Because I don't want them messing with the three Dells up here. Two with Win XP and a laptop with Vista. :o)
Anything else I can help you with?
;o)
And I might add that that Gateway with Win 98 was purchased in 1999 and runs like a top.
I've been serching the forum but need help finding a wireless adapter for an old (but hardly used) Gateway with Win98 (not SE). What are my options? Checking stores I only find Netgear listing win98 compatibility. Thanks for the help.
Bob
It needs NO drivers. The ethernet cable goes from the old machines to the ethernet ports on the WGPS606 and the WGPS606 does all the wifi work. You can opt out of using the printer ports.
Bob
Bob,
I'm not sure if you are answering me but I want to go wireless with Win98.
Bob
I'm sharing this device works fine with 98.
