Hi Mr Fishy,
Darren Yates is a contributing editor for Australian PCuser, and only last month created a Xubuntu UserOS Home Server.
The operating system, based on Xubuntu 8.04 but topped up with MythTV, BackupPC, VLC and a number of other features, is available on the current October 2008 issue of PC User.
I haven't tried this yet, as i am using the trial of WHS and really like it!
I guess a factor for you to consider is since your running all 3 flavours of OS, then you should probably check to see if BackupPC will back all 3 up. Otherwise WHS only support Windows back ups naturally.
Hope this helps!
I just need the backup on windows and linux and will use time macen for the macs
1st the linux box is just a netbook dont care if its backed up
I have serl Vista DVRs and want file sharing between them AKA record something in bedroom but watch it inn living room
my colleton of music is on my mac book and want to play that on media centers
Networked printers
Auto back up for the PCs
A way to use Time Macien on the macs
and to be totaly unreasnable the Moon
I also want to play the music on my macbook on my gamming PC
all my music is DRM free MP3s if that means anthing
I tried WHS a bit, but it didn't like my hardware. Since I quickly gave up & just used an OpenSuse distro, most of what I know about WHS is hearsay.
That said... ask around about how well WHS plays with others. I've heard it doesn't like non NTFS/SMB clients. Ubuntu would likely be a lot more work to set up, but infinitely more flexible.
