Gotta have a contest to name it:
Macbook Slow
MacNovella
Macbook Even-Mini-er
Macintosh Helium
Macbook Pro -- Screen optional
Ok, some of those are lame, but best I could do on a moment's notice.
Maybe an Intel Atom based Air. ![]()
I'm waiting to see what they come out with before making my laptop decision. Right now I'm leaning toward Dell.
Call it the SmackBook since Apple fans will buy it like an addict...
Nevermind...
They could call it the Atombook.
It might not even have an Intel Atom processor in it; it could have a special ultra-low-power version of the Macbook Air's Core 2, which itself is a low-power version of the mobile Core 2s, which themselves are low-power versions of the real Core 2s. Being a low-power version of a low-power version of a low-power version of a decent chip will probably degrade the performance such that it would feel like you were running Mac OS X on an Intel Atom.
Or, they could call it the Rootbook, as it will probably ship with several laughably-simply local security flaws that won't get fixed for another two years.
And the new dual core Atoms get the nickname Helium...
Low voltage CPU's are very expensive. And suited to ultraportables like the MacBook air rather than a cheap netbook. Hmm the MacBook air is also a 13" screen and not one of those cheap 9" ones. Maybe a MacBook vaccuum or something a little smaller. Maybe an iPhone os based thin tablet.
I've been disappointed way too many times at these Apple product announcements to know that having high expectations will only lead to heartbreak. As much as I would like to see an $800 notebook, I'm sure it will have some deal breaker downside to it. The one thing Apple has to ditch once in for all is the stupid combo drive. It's downright embarrassing. I don't know of any PC laptops these days that ship with a dinky combo drive. Just about every laptop including the low end models come with a DVD burner these days. I'm fully expecting Apple to come out with an almost decent product but with some glaring flaw like battery that cannot be removed, or some limitation where you have to buy a proprietary thingamajig you really need for an extra hundred bucks. Oh yea.. it will be a cold day in hell if they add a second button to the trackpad so you can actually do a right click. You don't have to replying to this message about how you can do right click by holding down control key because I already know.
comment. Whether it be an ethernet jack or a 56k modem dongle or an external hard drive its just kind of silly to not include it in the product in the name of saving space if you know the customer is just going to have carry it around with them anyway. So much for saved space.
But can we please drop the Mac right button comments once and for all?
All desktop macs have shipped with a multi-button mouse for over 3 years and they have supported multiple button mice out of the box for over a decade.
And Mac notebooks have had two finger tap context menu for almost 3 years now as well. And as of last year we have even more possibilities with multitouch trackpad gestures. Two finger multi-directional scroll is pure genius. You'll never have to hunt down a GUI scrollbar again.
I for one am glad I don't have to look down at the buttons to make sure I'm hitting the right one on my Macbook. That was one of the most irritating things about my previous Vaio laptop.
Kevin has a rumor that Mac might support BluRay in the new computers. He stated it on his live Diggnation show in London.
I think I've got it.

Note the $899 thing has the code K29 which is different from the laptops, which all start with M, M96 etc...
I think it's a docking station, a thing that looks like an iMac that accepts a laptop in it.
Apple filed this patent a while ago.

Also rumours are saying nvidia chipset based. With SLI and uses integrated graphics to save power when the GPU is not needed.
Why, during an economic crisis when everyone else is lowering prices, would Apple actually raise the price of their entry level laptop to 1300 dollars from 1100 (remember the iBook at one time had a 995 dollar model)? They just lowered prices across the board on iPods so this doesn't seem logical nor does it seems like a good idea for their stock prices.
Perhaps they plan to make up for slower sales with higher margins. LOL.
The low end Macbook is indeed 995 dollars. But its now like the red headed stepchild to its more expensive shiny aluminum and glass older siblings.
The sub 1000 dollar Macbook is now like the eMac was to the iMac: a leftover. Its just a placeholder until the more expensive models trickle down in price and it can be put out of its misery.
