I have a great samsung LCD TV, the LN32A450C1DXZA. My computer is a Compaq Presario X1000 laptop (which has a wider-ratio screen than the typical laptop.)
I succeed in using the video cable to use the tv set as a monitor for my computer, so I can watch downloaded movies, etc.
But my only issue is this. My laptop has a fairly wide screen, not the normal aspect ratio. So its ideal resolution is 1280x800, not 1024x768.
When I use the tv as a monitor like that, it by default shows my computer video on the tv in 1024x768 mode, therefore leaving black bars at the right and left since the tv's aspect ratio is wider. BUT, when I use the Displays Control Panel to tell the computer to be in the good 1280x800 mode, it doesn't nicely take over the space of those black bars at the right and left like it should. Instead, it still shows the video in the middle section of the tv, and then "nicely" allows me to use the mouse to pan left and right, which scrolls the image left and right to allow me to see the wider horizontal image.
Naturally this doesn't serve my purpose, I want the TV to simply show my full widescreen image on its nice wide screen.
Notice that I have indeed gone to the compaq/hp site and made sure that I am using their recommended driver for the computer's video card.
How can I get the samsung TV to make full use of its nice wide-ratio screen to show my computer's nice wide-ratio video signal... instead of putting black bars on the left and right and having it simply allow me to scan left and right to review the full real estate of the video?

Eric,
Glad to see you took the initiative to check the latest drivers.
Getting the picture right on the screen is going to be an expiriment in matching up the resolution of the television (wide, fill, stretch, etc) with the settings being output by your computer.
If you're using a Windows based system, you should be able to adjust the screen by right clicking on your desktop, selecting "properties" and clicking on the settings tab. From there, you can access the resolution for your secondary monitor. Once you've done that, go into the picture settings menu on the television, and adjusting that accordingly.
If your computer's screen is a different aspect ratio than 16x9 (which isn't necessarily uncommon) then the television is simply compensating for that issue by not leaving the default resolution or "streching" or "squishing" the picture just to fit the picture.
Many widescreen movies have the same issues with black bars on the top and bottom. What's happening there is that the director decided to use a different screen size as his or her default canvas. Even widescreen edition movies will still have black bars if that's what the director of the film wanted. Likewise, if the incoming signal is 4:3, regardless of the resolution, the television will put the black lines on the sides.
