XP Disk Defrag Problem

by skippydodah999 - 10/7/08 12:33 PM

A friend using XP home edition was running slow, I had him run disk cleanup and advised running disk defrag. When attempting to run defrag he received message: CHKDSK is scheduled to run. It would not allow him to run defrag. What can I advise him to do so he may run defrag ?

thanks

(NT) Please reboot and let chkdsk run at boot.

Appreciate the assistance. When he reboots, will chkdsk run or is there something he needs to do to allow it to run ?

thanks

Do a Check Disk every month, at least.

It does more then check the disk it also makes some repairs. Just good maintenace.

If you continue to have problems there are several defragers that work as well as Microsofts. They are available here:

http://www.download.com/1770-2001_4-0.html?query=defragment&tag=srch&searchtype=downloads

This one is well recommended by Cnet:

http://www.download.com/Auslogics-Disk-Defrag/3000-2094_4-10567503.html?tag=mncol&cdlPid=10857004

I like this one:

http://www.download.com/Smart-Defrag/3000-2094_4-10759533.html?tag=mncol&cdlPid=10883604

These are generally faster.

There are others as well.

Possible causes of your problem

I seem to recall that you need a minimum amount of free space on the hard drive free for XP's built-in disk defragmenting feature to run. I think there must be at least 100 MB free space --- otherwise it won't run or will run very, very slowly.

You might also want to disable your antivirus or Internet security software (best bet is to unplug your Internet cable for protection while your antivirus is off) and make sure you're not running other programs. If none of these steps work, try running the disk defrag in safe mode.

That said, the built-in defrag in Windows XP absolutely stinks beyond belief. Aside from its relatively slow speed, it does a lousy job of defragmenting your hard drive. You would be most prudent to download a free 30-day free trial of Diskeeper 2008 at http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.asp -- this is a great program, well worth its cost. It fixes the size of your master file allocation table (and defrags it) as well as defragging in the background without slowing computer performance. While you do get the fully functional program free for 30 days, my guess is that you'll want to buy it when the trial runs out. (I have no financial interest in Diskeeper Corporation at all.)

An alternative...

You might want to give this a try...

CNET would do well to review this product, it's every bit as good as CCleaner...it even defrags individual files.
