Needing help to manage passwords

by mzlo - 3/6/08 9:58 PM

We are a small business of 8, but we use a lot of technology. Is there a software that will keep a library of all our passwords for web as well as local logins, email passwords, etc. in encrypted format? We want one database that will allow users to access over the lan. I remember some older utilities but they were workstation specific. I don't want any autofill or automated web logins, just a common library for us to keep everything updated.

Not wise, I think

Office and business computer password security is a huge subject and you are right to think about it, but I am not at all sure having a central resource where passwords are stored is the right way to go.

Here are some of the problems, as I see it;

1] Everyone in the business can see everyone else's password.
2] If one employee is sacked, or otherwise becomes disillusioned, those passwords become vulnerable.
3] A hacker only needs to crack one, master, password to gain access to all the others.
4] If the file where those passwords are stored becomes corrupt, either through software or hardware failure, (eg disk failure), you lose access to all password required resources.
5] Backing up that main password file becomes more important, but also increases the risk. More available files to be cracked open.

That's just a few.

Even for a small business I believe it is imperative that each user learns to take responsibility for their own passwords. Passwords should be at least 6-8 characters long, (preferably 8), and should include random letters and numbers. No passwords of the type, 'password', 'admin', 'markflax', (or whatever the users name is, etc), and so on.

Others here may have other and/or better ideas, but I feel you need to think further about one central store for passwords.

Mark

http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/

Password Safe is a very good open source product, one that sounds like it would meet the needs you outlined above.

Give it a try.

Needing help to manage passwords

I've used RoboForm for two years now and find it to be an excellent way to manage all my passwords. It will go to a site and enter the userid and password and log you on automatically. It also will generate new passwords for you if you wish.I believe it is free for up to 10 different logins and if you require more than ten you have to purchase it. The web site is http://www.roboform.com.

I think you should try My Passwords

I've been using a program called Private Encryptor for a long time. It's a general purpose file encryption utility that comes with a handy little program called My Passwords. This program does exactly what you are asking for. It stores the passwords in an extremely secure encrypted format. You can import/export password files from a central network location so that you can maintain one single password list file shared amongst all your employees. I've never had any problems with this program so I highly recommend it! I have a bad memory so it makes my life a lot easier... :-)

You can download it here: http://www.tropsoft.com/
