Having difficulty in choosing...

by qkhalid31 - 10/8/08 3:45 AM

I have decided to get a new laptop but I am completely stuck in choosing which one to buy. My main use of the laptop is going to be gaming, so I am looking for something high up there. Also I am willing to spend up to $1600 (US).

I did A LOT of research. These are some of the laptops that I came up with:

Dell XPS M1530
Dell Studio 17
HP DV7-1020

The thing about the XPS is the fact that it comes with 15.4" screen rather than the 17". Even though I read a lot of reviews on the XPS and they all claimed it to be a very good gaming laptop.

Then I went around and looked at some of the other brands. I saw that Gateway had some nice gaming laptops as well (the P Series), and I heard a lot about Acer laptops. Although I have always been a Dell customer (my last 2 laptops are by Dell), im not sure how good Gateway or Acer is.

So right now, I can't decide what I want to buy. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.

Gaming laptops tend to be short lived machines.

All the extra heat and strain seems to be reducing the life of the device. Certainly the battery takes a beating. I'm seeing it hit exact the specification before people complain. That's all of 300 cycles and in one year people are noticing the battery time is shrinking.

The 17 inch display adds to it being not so portable.

Why must this be a laptop?

going to be moving

Well it has to be a laptop because after I get it, I will be moving to Japan for a bit, and over there I will be going to different places every other week or so. Plus I already have a pretty decent gaming desktop.

I know the 17" laptops are a bit heavy, but if that is going to be a better gaming laptop, then I don't mind it.

Then choose which has an international warranty.

HP used to be known for that but no longer. Ask Dell (call them!) and ask if you can get it fixed under the same conditions as you do here. Some explode as they find out the warranty is worthless when you cross borders.

My 2 Cents

I've had 17", 12" and 15" laptops. None have been as good as a desktop. The 17" was great. Great Screen, Great Sound and I just gave it up. The lack of portablity bothered me. It was just too big.

The 15" is a nice compromise. The 12" is too small.

One thing about the XPS. The sound isn't so hot. You may want to invest in some good but portable speakers to serve duty when you are playing a game on the laptop.

I like Dell so that's where I'd focus on the list. The XPS that my son has is very, very nice overall...except for the sound.

International Warranty

Regarding International warranty, I bought a Dell Vostro from US last year and was able to transfer ownership to India. The catch here is that they transferred Parts only Warranty and no Service warranty. So if something gone amiss I can get the replacement parts shipped to me but I have to install them myself.

Well here is the bottom line:

Dell XPS M1530 is rather sluggish than the 17"ers because it is thin and over-heating or operating tends to slow it down. 3GBs is recommended option in this baby, for gaming knock it up to 4GBs.

Dell Studio 17 (1735) is a better system as well as the HP DV7 one because they are bigger and better in gaming-wise, air-flow is better and system will be cooler. 2GBs is recommended for these fellas, bump to 3GBs for gaming.

Hope this helps.
