Use iphone for everything but the phone?

by zschork - 10/6/08 3:37 PM

I was going to get the ipod touch when i was thinking "can i just buy an iphone and use all of its features except the phone?" basically all ill get is the camera but that would be nice. ive learned i cant buy the 3g at any retail store, because ill be forced to activate it. Can i get an iphone (2g or 3g i dont care) off of ebay or craigslist, plug it in to my computer, and just use it as an ipod touch? Let me know thanks

In fact, you should be able to go down to any Apple or AT&T store and buy an iPhone 3G without activating it. You pay a premium ($599 for 8GB, $799 for 16GB) but you don't have to activate it or set up an AT&T account. It's important to note that the phone is NOT unlocked and will still only work on the AT&T cellular network, but for WiFi connectivity, it should be just fine.

You may need to use a tool such as QuickPwn to gain access to the device initially, but it's a very simple and straightforward process.
