Originally I tried installing SP3 on a system that had many programs and much data. It failed and corrupted my drive. So, I was forced to wipe my drive with KillDisk utility and re-install from my XPpro/SP2 CD and update it to SP3 plus other M% updates before installing anything else. I have no further problems, so far.
I posted this information on another thread, but...
I, too, had problems with SP3. I downloaded the entire file and installed. The computer booted, rebooted, rebooted...
So, I booted into safe mode as the administrator and uninstalled the update.
Somewhere (maybe even on CNet) I read that you could install on an AMD by going in as administrator in safe mode, and it should work. So I tried it.
Worked just fine after that. Might work for anyone who has had problems with the update.
I installed SP3 on my wifes computer with no issues. I don't see any real difference but no problems either.
I also put SP3 on my laptop (HP Pavailion) and found that I could no longer sync my Jornada 720. After trying to find a fix I gave up and uninstalled SP3. Now, my laptop works the same as before.

I'm running XP Pro, e-pc-40 CPU, AVG 7.5 FREE, and FF.
A person on another CNET forum gave me voluminous instructions of what to do prior to installing SP3. I was able to clean out .tmp and .chk files but everything fell apart after that, so I didn't finish.
Anyway, I finally installed SP3. And don't be shy about telling me I'm thinking of something else - it's highly likely. It has a Google task bar. When I'm at the Google homepage and strike one key, the URL choices come up. Once I'm at a site and strike a key for another site, I get every URL under the sun, but none of the choices have anything to do with the letter I struck. So, I'm left with having to remember a Web site or just doing another search for it.
As someone else has already mentioned... if you don't update to SP3, you will not be able to get SP4, when it becomes available.
Sure hope my terminology is correct, so I don't confuse you.

Pat,
I think you are referring to installing FIREFOX 3 (your web browser program) and not Service Pack 3 for WindowsXP (the actual operating system/foundation of your computer) as others are talking about here.
Many thanks for setting me straight. I had a feeling...
I have SP3 on some of my machines and I've had no trouble with it and it does seem to be marginally faster than SP2. I do have a couple of machines I haven't put it on yet because I bought them secondhand and they don't have the original recovery disks.
That said, I haven't used the update process at all. My SP2 systems were becoming decidedly cluttered, so I took the opportunity to do a clean install and reload the applications. I slipstreamed SP2 on to my original distribution disks foe this purpose - nlite is a nice slipstreamer if anyone wants to go down this path.
If you decide to upgrade your existing system, before you do anything else, take a full backup of your system, so that if anything does go wrong, you can get your current system back.
And as others have suggested, I wouldn't attempt to use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to do the upgrade - download the full installation package from Microsoft and then do your upgrade offline. That way, you can turn off your antivirus/firewall/antispam programs safely while you do the update.
Do you need it? Well, as they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" but sooner or later, Microsoft will stop shipping patches for SP2. So I'd say Yes, you need it but when is your choice.
Get for no other reasons than...
(a) Security updates,
(b) Speedier boot times,
(c) In my experience, it fixed registry errors that caused weird intermittent lockups at boot time.
I let it install on my hp Media Center 7077c computer automatically via download over time (not all at once) and never disabled any anti-virus software. -I have not had any noticeable problem with it! Was I lucky? Don't know, but it went fine for me.
I have it installed on all 4 of our computers & everything is running fine on all of them. Two are running XP- 1 PRO. And 2 are running Windows Vista. And I have a wireless router (Linksys) that I have for the two laptops. So far; no problems. I always read up on everything before I install things. And the service packs are always high priority for me. Always.
