Hello boys and girls.
I have older computers.
I am use to WinXP Home, WIN98SE, it's all I have used, I like it, I know what I am doing with them, I like to use MSCONFIG and all that kind of thing.
Okay now for the can of worms and debate.
What is a good FREE OS I can use ?
And IF I don't have drivers and such and they can't hardly be found
will this FREE OS be okay, like WINXP even if generic they still perform good it seems.
(I would have put this in the operating systems forum but you have to choose a specific OS)
Noone else ?
(NT)Linux, is that like a version or type ?
I think I recall years ago people saying something about
"Red Hat Linux"?
What are the benefits and or differences ?

But remember, we usually what we pay for.;)
Haha, well I did that long ago ![]()
Yeah, why pay to get screwed when you can get the same
and in some cases better quality for free.
I would rather take a free screwing than a paid version.
Good one. :^O
I occasionally play with the free Knoppix 4.0 (a version of Linux I believe) which seems to have everything Window has, though quite different. The download was so large (700+MB I think) and since I am on dialup I decided to pay $5.95 to have it mailed to me on disk.
I didn't use it very much as it seemed so slow. But now that I have upgraded my RAM maybe I give it another shot.

Did you try the ReactOS?

Sounds interesting. Think I'll play around with it a bit. With all the free OS's coming about, who knows, I may never have buy another one.

Well Hi there Proffitt.
Which one or ones do you use ?
Or do you use more than one or something different than Windows.
The workhorse is running Windows 2000.
The laptop I take when demo'ing software I've written is on XP.
The new laptop which I'm testing our software on is Vista.
I still boot to Linux (PCLinux 2008) once in awhile but our plans to issue our software to Linux is on indefinite hold since there are no signs it will generate revenue.
The next plan is for an Apple.

I ran QEMU on XP Home and ReactOS inside the QEMU window. Isn't that compatible enough?
First tried the VMware d/l but during installation got a error message regarding incompatible OS. And though it did seem to install, it was inoperable.
QEMU is another story. QEMU seems to be working out fine.
Now "I'm" the wrench in the works, well, til I get used to it.
Charlie
This site has a bunch of differant OS's look around, read what they have to say and try out whats there. I don't mess around with OS's so I personaly haven't tried any. So beware and becareful.
