I will probably get no love for this post, but I had to say it. Why is Natali Del Conte given so much exposure on BOL? She (mostly) doesn't have any objective views, she (mostly) has subjective views based on ignorance and in no way can match the chops of Tom, Molly or Jason. If I want a less geeky show, I can always tune to MSM's coverage of tech(Blah!).Every time she is on the show, we have Tom, Molly or Jason politely correctly or informing her. Let BOL 819 be a case study.
To sum it up - She is not geek enough for the show!
Please prove me wrong.
I like Miss Del Conte, personally. In terms of chops, I think her bio speaks for itself:
Host of a daily news show on CNET TV called Loaded.
Regular guest on national and local news shows and networks including The Today Show, CNBC, BBC, ABC, The CW, WNBC, CBS, Fox News, Fox Business News, G4TV, and Univision (Spanish-language reporting).
Prior to joining CNET, wrote, produced, and hosted a show called TeXtra on the Podshow network.
Has written for WIRED, Variety Magazine, MarketWatch, TechCrunch, The San Francisco Examiner, AppScout, PC Magazine, ELLEgirl, Aware Magazine, The Oakland Tribune, Hispanic Magazine, Hispanic Trends, and The Santa Cruz Sentinel.
Has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from California State University, Hayward and a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Southern California.
First, Tong must be ecstatic that this thread isn't about him, lol.
Secondly, you have to remember that sometimes (I don't know in this case) these guest hosts are roped in at the last minute, and haven't had the time to do the due diligence on the stories in the BOL rundown for the day.
...and that is why you are wrong.
This is my wild a** guess. CBS|net is using the popularity of Buzz to pimp other shows. Hence the now heavy rotation of guests even when JoMoTo is in full force.
It gave me physical pain listening to her in EP819 talking about the Zune, I had to stop listening. She needs more practice.
I have always enjoyed Natali on the podcast and she fits in wonderfully... great energy.
I like her also Molly is sick
I don't think there's anything wrong with Natali at all.
She has a great take on the socialised areas of technology for the less technologically centric, more media-aware among us and she is obviously an authority in those areas. And let's face it, there are a great deal of stories which involve this area in tech these days.
And with all respect to the great and departed-from-the-show V, I find Natali's voice less - and I am bracing myself for the inevitable flames from the V Army - shall we say, prone to hit certain pitches which make me wince.
But, on the other hand it seems to be that she doesn't have a core technical grounding, so she will have a more mainstream-press type of view on many of the more involved areas of tech.
I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with that combo, but since all of the BOL guys are effectively 'media people' of varying degrees, having someone overtly skewed to that side there is a danger of the tech shows turning into shows about media in tech, as TWIT for example occasionally succumbs to every now and again.
However, I think we can trust Molly to fish it out if it gets too much that way.
I think style and chemistry is as much a part of BOL's attraction as anything. Natalie is a good presenter, and obviously smart, but less adept in an informal setting. I don't find her irritating as much as bored by her often banal comments.
And I haven't looked at the forums since the guest-hosts started in earnest... based on the comment here, apparently I'm not the only one irritated by Tong. Is he a corporate placement after the 12-and-under crowd for CNET? He actually seems like a likable guy, if he would just dial-down the goofiness and cringe-inducing slang (I think my grandmother said "hizz house" the other day, for cripes sake).
Coo
I like her, but she comes across as a bit of a lightweight.
I don't think she's a bad addition to BOL. I don't find her boring or less technical than JaMoTo whatsoever. I think her style is a little different than the rest of the clan, but that's to be expected. Her areas of expertise also differ vastly than the rest of the BOL crew.
Molly, Tom and Jason are together every day, they have learned to compliment each other and can most likely finish each other's sentences at this point in the game.
Let up on NDC..she's just as knowledgeable, if not more so, than any of the other guest hosts that rotate through.
Are BOL listeners becoming "tech snobs"? C'mon, we're better than this. Tom, Molly and Jason have all been wrong at some point as well..If she made a mistake it's just more obvious to us because she's not on the show nearly as often.
I'm done
I agree with the original poster, and am not a fan of NDC on the show. Actually, I find myself listening less and less to BOL with their new format and don't enjoy the guests hosts as much as some of you do.
It was a lot more enjoyable with JaMoTo along with the occasional guest which then was something different and surprising.
Who actually likes all the guest hosts? Everyone adds something to the core configuration. You have MoJaToCoo(Cooley), which seems more rant and expletive oriented. JaMoToNa (Natalie), which seems to take a more mainstream approach. Then there's TonMoJaTo(Tong), which has extra energy infused into it and finally RaJaToMo(Rafe), which is extra geeky.
And I'm surprised I'm the only one to make a Voltron-inspired take on this. Talk about geek cred
I'm trying to imagine what the MoJaToCoo Voltron would look like. I already know what it would say: @#%@#-ing SanDisk! @#$@#$-ing Europeans! $%@#$!
The JaMoToNa Voltron would always have its hands folded in front of it's stomach. And be hot.
And the TonMoJaTo Voltron would have to have spiky hair and yell real loud.
