Me

by EdHannigan - 9/26/08 8:28 PM In reply to: who won the presidential debate by TOREY RAY

I didn't watch, so I won. I watched the Dog Whisperer and dozed off a bit. I think if someone doesn't know by now who to vote for (or against) they should seriously consider sitting this one out.

The debates are meaningless. Is "debating" a skill the President needs (except when campaigning)? It's ridiculous. If you don't know by this late date what the candidates positions are and don't have a good idea of their characters, again, consider not voting.

BTW, one analyst tells me McCain won; another says Obama. So no one knows.

The Debate

by Mac McMullen - 9/26/08 9:14 PM In reply to: who won the presidential debate by TOREY RAY

I don’t know why, maybe because there was nothing else on TV, and I was otherwise bored, but I watched “The Debate” from Old Miss.

Obama was himself, doing that which he is particularly good at, “performing” before a crowd. Obviously he was fully prepared , made obvious by his command of names of individuals and countries. In one instance, Barack verified a long held opinion of mine, that they held similar thinking on many subjects. When, during an exchange of previous “voting for” or “voting against” withdrawal of troops from Iraq, Obama cared to point out that McCain’s vote was because of an attempted “date certain”, and his own vote was because of “lack of a timeline“, agreeing that both were intent on an earliest withdrawal.

McCain, also well prepared, was himself, focused, serious and passionate, particularly about national security. His extensive travels to and within trouble areas of the Middle East, and meetings with leaders in those areas, was certainly a positive note.

I called it a tie with no clear cut “winner“.

In my mind, a decision of who to “vote for” seems to come back to “Age, experience and craftiness overcoming youth, enthusiasm and stamina“. Although youth possibly presents a greater opportunity for innovation in a quest or change, conditions in the world today, and at home, certainly precludes the Oval Office from becoming a learning laboratory.

My only comments

by Angeline Booher Moderator - 9/27/08 7:31 AM In reply to: who won the presidential debate by TOREY RAY

.... are more about presence.

McCain made me uncomfortable when I thought of him facing a some world leader during a crisis. Perhaps the need to demonize him in order to fight him. I think that was apparent from his no eye contact approach to Obama, and the underlying anger.

I was also surprised at his laissez faire attired toward soldiers dying in battle... so depersonalized.

not looking at Obama

by James Denison - 9/27/08 8:46 AM In reply to: My only comments by Angeline Booher Moderator

I noticed him not looking at Obama and thought it bad form, UNTIL I realized why. McCain was busy during times Obama spoke making notes, probably of points Obama made which McCain wanted to be sure and address. Once that's realized the impression of him "ignoring" Obama fades away. I do think McCain could have glanced that way more and maybe looked at the camera a few times, but he's not spent his life on polishing his TV appearances, but on being a statesman in the Senate.

there was no point in looking at each other

by WOODS-HICK - 9/27/08 8:54 AM In reply to: not looking at Obama by James Denison

they needed to influence and convince the audience at home watching.

they already know what one has said about the other. it showed McCain doesn't follow orders from the media.

I noticed that too...

by J. Vega - 9/27/08 9:13 AM In reply to: not looking at Obama by James Denison

I noticed that too. I also noticed that sometimes after he did that he smiled and waited to respond. Evey time I saw that, I thought "here it comes". One other thing, remember the "old pen" line and his holding it up? He appeared to take notes with another one, the silver colored one. I suspect that that "old pen" may have been a prop, just there for when he dropped that line.

silver or white?

by James Denison - 9/27/08 10:21 AM In reply to: I noticed that too... by J. Vega

I thought it looked white and at first thought of a piece of chalk, but I realized that meant he'd be writing on a chalk board and humorously thought, "surely he's not THAT old". ;)

What was he writing on anyway? Paper, or some computer graphic pad?

If I had to guess...

If I had to guess, I'd say that it looked like a Cross brand, those things are all over the place.

Looked to me...

by J. Vega - 9/27/08 11:20 AM In reply to: Crosspad? by James Denison

It looked to me like he was writing on a note pad with a long, thin pen like a Cross Pen.

Obama one.

by Dan McC - 9/27/08 3:38 PM In reply to: who won the presidential debate by TOREY RAY

But that's only if you count the winner as the one who gave better answers, more coherent arguments, and presented better.
