by ron hossack - 9/6/08 5:28 PM In reply to: Free my poor tired rearend by PapaGus

>I looked at both of the "FREE" software mentioned - neither one are
>free - so that negates everything else that was said.

Are you in reference to CCleaner and AWC? Both are free and I use them as well as the Iobit smart defrag.

link to the free version of CCleaner

by barbless - 9/7/08 8:39 AM In reply to: Free my poor tired rearend by PapaGus

Here is a link to the page where you can download CCleaner (look for the big green arrow to the right): http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

I have bypassed the screen where there is an option to DONATE some money for this freeware software. If you find that you come to depend on CCleaner, then please think about donating some money to make sure it continues to exist: http://www.ccleaner.com/download

I have been using CCleaner for several months now and highly recommend it. I find it to be very useful and fast. I also use the uninstall option - it seems to do a more thorough job than Vista. I am one of those computer geek engineers so I download all kinds of stuff.

As a general rule, whenever you find yourself in the midst of having to accept some "offer", you are in the wrong place. Just stop. Close the screen. Start over. There are many download sites that are reliable. I use Tucows, Snapfiles, CNet (where you are now). These sites are above-board and offer ratings and reliable downloads.

There are lots of sites that advertise "free" programs that end up running some test that always tells you that if you don't buy their software to fix the million problems they found, then your computer will grow legs and rampage through your house destroying life as we know it. Resist the urge to click on these advertisements. Sometimes you can be searching for some product and think you are going one place when you are, in reality, being sent to another. You get hijacked to some marketing or phishing site. To cut down on this, add the home page of the site you trust to your favorites folder and use that link.

Also, please do not run out and pay for some program that makes lots of promises. See if there is a comparable freeware program available. Check out what other people have to say about a program you are thinking about buying. You will save a lot of money and a boatload of time and frustration trying to undo the problems some badly written, over-priced software caused.

CC Cleaner and Advanced Windows Care Personal

by AussieCam13 - 9/8/08 8:51 AM In reply to: Free my poor tired rearend by PapaGus

PapaGus labors under a misconception that these products are not free and that therefore anything the previous poster said is invalid. Logically, PapaGus's inference is wrong. But that isn't the point of my post.

Both CC Cleaner and Advanced Windows Care Personal come in a free version (with minor limitations placed on them, from my perspective) and paid versions.

I have had and used the free versions for over a year, and i'm always amzazed at the amount of junk they scrape off the computer. I always download updates for these programs when i'm notified they're available, and i have never had a computer problem that i could trace to either program.

I have also downloaded and use the (free) MS Windows Defender and let it scan away once a week in the wee hours of the morning. For general protection, I'm currently using Trend Micro Internet Security, which has efficient firewalls and spam filters that keep most junk off.

Until recently, i used two free programs, Spybot Search and Destroy (it solicits contributions but that's all) and Lavasoft's Ad-Aware--the free version, not the paid one. Both did a great job of keeping malware and adware off the computer.

The one paid program i have used for years is Diskkeeper, which i find does a better job keeping disk fragmentation under control.

Having said all that, the one semi-expert task that can help operating performand and shut-down speed, is to go to the control panel and work through services, inactivating those that aren't needed; this isn't a task for a novice, though.

hope this helps.

CCleaner is free and AWC is 'free for personal use'

by jojoleb - 9/8/08 10:29 AM In reply to: Free my poor tired rearend by PapaGus

CCleaner is free with donations suggested. The download site is:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Advanced WindowsCare is FREE for personal use. The following version can be downloaded from CNET:
http://www.download.com/Advanced-WindowsCare-Personal/3000-2086_4-10407614.html?part=dl-AdvancedW&subj=uo&tag=button

There is also a 'Professional' version which is NOT free, but the 'Personal' version works well. No one program will work for everyone and there are some excellent suggestions in the posts below. These are the simplest, automated ways to solve this kind of problem and do not require technical expertise. Even so, any time you are dealing with tricky areas, such as editing the registry, you should set a system restore point (both programs do this before running)so that if your system crashes during the 'repair' it can be restored.

I have and use

CCCleaner on the Wdoze machines I support. It is free. You can find it from the c|Net downloads section or on the net. If you Google it the first three or four sites are scumbags that try to charge you for it. The program is free. The sites are gouging you.

BTW it does work for Vista and XP.

Say what?

by santuccie - 9/29/08 12:43 PM In reply to: Free my poor tired rearend by PapaGus

Both come in free versions:
http://www.download.com/CCleaner/3000-2144_4-10315544.html?tag=mncol&cdlPid=10876371
http://www.download.com/Advanced-WindowsCare-Personal/3000-2086_4-10407614.html?tag=mncol&cdlPid=10890240

And as far as I know, CCleaner doesn't even come in a paid version. The vendor's site does encourage you to donate, but it's not like anyone is putting a gun to your head!

Papagus,

Both Ccleaner & Advanced Windows Care Personal are free to use. I don't know why you think they aren't free, but I've been using them for some time and they are free. You'd better go back and look at what you thought was for purchase and pick them up. They do work well.

the personal version is free

by veryspecialladie - 11/2/08 1:44 PM In reply to: Free my poor tired rearend by PapaGus

If you go to download.com and type in the program you want and then search for the personal version. Of course they will advertise the pro version and you sometimes have to search for the free version. This is why if you want a free version it is easiest and best to go to www.downloads.com and load it from there. Actually you can find most any type of free or program that are for sale plus the ratings if you just go there.
