Too many!

I have close to 20 on my corporate laptop - 5 network ststus icons, 3 security apps, 2 each for IM clients and phone sync, and the rest are my GPS, a backup app, and a bunch of Windows bits (volume, power status, desktop search, hadrware removal).
It would be great if most of them would just hide until they have something important to say, wouldn't it...

I have my internet connection state (both physical and wireless) up at all times, volume control, power state, anti-virus icon, and Install Shield manager. That makes 6, but I could trim it down to 4 if I really wanted to...On my desktop, I have a graphics card icon, anti-virus, volume, network connection status, second (and third) graphics controller (I run with three monitors) and Windows Defender icon...a few more than the laptop, but it's a bigger machine, so it can handle it

5) avast! On-Access Scanner
6) Synaptics Pointing Device (laptop)
7) Realtek HS Audio Manager
8) DigitalPersona Personal (finger scan to log on)
9) Current Power
10) Network Connection
11) Volume
Sometimes others like Bluetooth are there too.

Except for two, they are all icons that I chose to put there. Windows Sidebar generates an icon whenever the sidebar is closed. While having the icon isn't something that I wanted, at least I can hide it. My antivirus also creates an icon, which means I can remove the one it creates on the desktop. The others are either temporary icons that are present only when the app is running (Outlook, for example) or else they are things like sound volume control or network status that I wanted there. I don't count the clock as an icon, though technically it is.

Not all are necessary but these are the ones that are there most of the time
1.Clock - Not needed but helpful
2.Safely Remove Hardware - Only there about 45% of the time
3.Volume - There about 30% of the time
4.HP Digital Imaging Monitor - Needed for my printer, and is always there
5.Webroot AntiVirus with AntiSpyware and Firewall - Obviously needed
All of them are set to "Always Hide" except Webroot and the clock.
I have 4 icons including the time.

I have four icons and they include the time, my antivirus, quick time and the volume icon.

I always keep track of my stuff. I have a kind of Mac Bar (runnin gon vista) that holds my favorite programs or links to program folders (I have a lot of things). And I try to have the LEAST possible process running at the same time, so right now, I have 4 icons. One is the sound, one is my network, one is MSN and the last one is ATI (sadly I don't have a geforce card) and I don't count the time as an icon. I'm a gamer so I need all the process and the memory I can get out of my PC. My Mac Bar is the best! =D

I have 5 including the clock. The others are the Wireless Network Connection, Safely Remove Hardware, Webroot Antivirus, and Dell Support Center. I hate clutter.

On this HP/Compaq laptop, there are 11 icons, including the clock. They are Volume, the touchpad icon, the battery/AC icon, something called "Credential Manager" (for the fingerprint reader), "Safely Remove Hardware", the local area connection and wireless network connection icons, the WLAN antenna, Zonealarm icon, and the antivirus icon. When I'm online, there is also the dial-up icon. This laptop gets to the login screen in about 30 seconds and about another 45 seconds to finish, after the user enters his p/w.
