Msconfig/startup Simplified

by bdaleday - 9/20/08 6:26 AM In reply to: start menu by RDO CA

Several months ago I called my PC manufacturer (Emachines) to ask about the 'msconfig' method of stopping unwanted startup programs. Their rep made it very simple: click on 'disable all', then restart the PC. I told them that sounded scary, but they reassured me that XP will automatically assure that no critical programs are stopped. They were right; now I use that simple method frquently to tweak my system.
Here's an incidental side-note: I used to sometimes have AOL and Internet Explorer running at the same time. I found that's a bad idea because they seem to 'battle' each other for CPU Usage, so now I run only one at a time. You can watch who's competing for your CPU by displaying the little green Windows Task graphic in your system tray. Just press Ctrl/Alt/Del once to display it. It lets you monitor how busy your CPU is; then you can double-click on it to see which processes are gobbling up your CPU at any instant.

Well, you have to do some research!

by DLGiles - 9/20/08 9:18 AM In reply to: start up by JayPeeBee

When you go to the Start Button> click on Run> Then type in "msconfig". You will see a tab mark "Services". Go to the bottom and check "Hide All Microsoft Services" this way you are not turning off anything that allow your computer to run. Then Google the ones left that you don"t know. So you will know what to turn off and what not.

The same with the "Start Tab" except there is no "Hide All Microsoft Services" box. This are just all programs that you installed on your system. But you still need to know which is which. Like your "sound drive".

disable MSCONFIG startup items

by bently - 9/20/08 1:33 PM In reply to: start up by JayPeeBee

For the past couple years the only items I allow to start in MSCONFIG/START is AntiVirus and my Firewall.

If I need something that is un-checked, I start it manually when I need it.

I have not had any problems doing this.

Startup Programs

by drbooth - 9/19/08 8:27 PM In reply to: startup programs by nElSuN777

Lee and whomever else is looking at this issue. Whenever I see a
reference to startup programs, the usual "start ->run ->msconfig" is
mentioned. There is a free program on www.sysinternals.com written
by a couple of guys that know what they are doing. (M$ liked their
work and have that team working for them). Anyway, to make a long story short, go to that site and download and install a program named Autoruns. This program will, quite possible, surprise you on just how many programs start up whenever you reboot. You will get a rather comprehensive listing of your startup programs and, as it is with msconfig, there are check boxes beside each program. Merely left click
the check box and disable the program you no longer need. This action will leave the necessary components while disabling any that you know
you do not need or use at all. Have a good day...

Autoruns

by rfriendship - 9/20/08 2:53 AM In reply to: Startup Programs by drbooth

drbooth hits the nail firmly on the head with the suggestion to try Autoruns, from sysinternals. I've used it for a number of years, and as has been reported, Microsoft was suitably impressed by these two Gurus, (and they ARE!) so that it now has them in its own domain.
They write software and technical for all sorts of issues and if you're into involved issues then take a gander at their work.
Excellent!

Windows Update no longer works

by mapguyana - 9/20/08 5:22 PM In reply to: Autoruns by rfriendship

Automatic update no longer works and I examined my PC's profile via Belarc Advisor I found that I have about 24 missing updates both important and critical levels. When I try to perform an update through IE7 I get the error message:

Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

Choosing this option results in a frustrating loop.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I trawled MS sites and was told to re-register several .dll files some of which were successful but the 2 below returned the following error:
wuapi.dll )
) DllRegisterServer in wuapi failed. Return code was 0x80070005
MSXML3.dll )
I thought that using SP 3 might help solve the problem but I had trouble getting SP3 from the Update Centre and had to get the standalone version from the MU Catalogue. Now I am very reluctant to let SP3 loose on my system. Can it solve the problem? Or will it thrash my system?

My System
Dell Dimension 2400 XPS
1.5GB ram
80GB HDD
Windows XP SP2

Please help.

Rt Click "my Computer" > Manage and browse around for lots of uneful including services which can be disabled. Some of the should be disabled for security reasons.

Disable startups permanently

by 1Chris - 9/15/08 3:07 PM In reply to: How to disable unnecessary programs running in the backgrund by Noah Wintz

How about start up items that I disable in system config and if I ever use that program, say intermittently like AOL or Windows Live Messenger, they show up again. Can I disable these from starting up permanently?
