How do I disable unnecessary programs running in my PC’s background?

by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator - 9/25/08 12:59 PM

Question:

Many times people mention that to speed up your computer’s
overall speed--including Windows start-up, and shut
down--is to eliminate unnecessary programs from running in
the background. Is this true? I have never truly
understood whether controlling the programs linked to your
start menu is the answer, and I don't seem able to
successfully link the ones I want to open on start-up and
unlink the others. Please help me understand, as I’m not
at all familiar with this. What is the exact process that
I need to take to stop the unnecessary programs from
starting up and running in the background? Please explain
in detail a way in which I can do this safely and
successfully. I’m running Windows XP. Thanks a big bunch!

by benaloy - 9/19/08 11:42 PM In reply to: Use CCleaner by moviegeek65

Please correct me ... CCleaner does clean by deleting all temporary files and recovers little space.
But does it help in anyway to stop unwanted programs at Start Up of pc.

Yes CCleaner has Start up

by linitwdwrd - 9/20/08 4:37 AM In reply to: CCleaner by benaloy

Open up to Startup and delete all startup software except for your Anti Virus. Should use AVG

Use it at least once a week

by puma - 9/22/08 7:45 PM In reply to: Use CCleaner by moviegeek65

unfortunately you can't disable internet explorer which is a major cause of migraine headaches. you may not seeing it running, but internet explorer is embedded into the OS and it is always on... bad design for any OS

PUMA IS TOTALLY MISTAKEN - DISABLING STARUP APPS BY GEO

by GEO2003 - 9/22/08 10:01 PM In reply to: IE by puma

PUMA WE ARE GOING TO KICK YOU OUT OF THIS BLOG TOO IF YOU DON'T STOP HARRAZING PEOPLE WITH YOUR BAD COMMENTS.

TO ALL HERE, PLEASE NOTE THAT PUMA HAS BEEN FOUND IN OTHER FORUMS HERE AT CNET JUST COMPLAINING ABOUT VISTA AND MICROSOFT.

I KNOW MANY OF YOU ARE TRYING TO HELP AND SO AM I, THAT'S WHY I ASKED YOU TO IGNORE HIS COMMENTS.

HE HAS NO ADVISE TO HELP MEMBER, ALL HE DOES IS COMPLAIN.

HE WAS ALREADY KICKED OUT OF THE OTHER FORUM.

DON'T LET HIS BAD COMMENTS AFFECT YOU.

HE HAS HIS OPINION WE UNDERSTAND THAT, BUT IF HE DOES NOT WANT TO HELP THEN IT IS USELESS FOR HIM TO BE HERE.

I AM NOT DEFENDING MICROSOFT OR WINDOWS, I AM HERE BECAUSE MY EXPERINCES WITH XP AND VISTA HAVE BEEN POSITIVE.

FOR SOME OF YOU WHO MIGHT NEED A LITTLE BIT OF HELP TO UNDERSTAND THE WAY THE OPERATING SYSTEM WORKS AND HOW TO SOLVE SOME PROBLEMS.

NOTE THAT HIS COMMENT HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MEMBER'S QUESTION.

THANK YOU
GEO

PROFESIONALISIM BY PUMA FROM GEO

by GEO2003 - 9/23/08 9:18 AM In reply to: pro level by puma

FIRST PUMA,
I HAVE BEEN BERY PROFESSIONAL WITH YOU ON THE OTHER FORUM AND VERY UNDERSTANDING TRYING TO MAKE SESE OF YOU.

But In reality I am getting a little sick and tired of your remarks.

YOU ARE ENTITLE TO YOUR OPINIOn, NO ONE IS CASTING YOU OUT FOR THAT.

But this is a forum were people come for help, not to hear you rant about issues that don't concern or address the members issues.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT. WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM IN UNDERSTAND HELP VERSUS IGNORANT COMMENTS SUCH AS YOURS.

Everytime you post semething MISLEADING, WHICH YOU DID ON THE OTHE FORUM the member reading may get confused and you are making everyone's life more difficult.

We are begining to take see you in a different light and getting serious about kickin you out of every forum at cnet because you dont' understand that member are asking FOR HELP. NOT YOUR OPINION ABOUT HOW GOOD OR BAD WINDOWS IS.

And in Answer to your question.

Microsoft, fought the issue of including IE in court as part of their ANTITRUST CASE, to my recollection there were INSTRUCTED TO SEPARATE THE BROWSER FROM THE OPERATING SYSTEM IN THOSE DAYS XP.

IE CAN BE UNINSTALLED FROM ANY VERSION OF XP.

HOWEVER, I admit that I don't remember how the law applies to Vista.

Yes I grant you that IE is not shown on the Unistall Program Section of Vista as an individual Item, BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT CAN'T BE UNINSTALL.

However, since you are so Unhappy with Windows Call Microsoft or do some Searching about how to uninstall Internet Explorer.

IN ADDITION, you clamp on to bashing MS when APPLE just tried to FORCE USERS TO DOWNLOAD THEIR SAFARY BROWSER BY TYING IT TO ITUNES.

They did not get away with this because Free Rights Activist fought this and APPLE DISABLE this.

Microsoft is still under Guidelines of The Antitrust Case therefore, they can't force anyone to use IE.

You wanted out called them.

The issue of IE loading AGAIN WAS NOT THE QUESTION OF THE MEMBER.

Again I remind you, the question is

HOW I DISABLE APPLICATIONS FROM STARTING WITH WINDOWS.
The member did not stated IE PER SAY.

SO ONCE AGAIN, I am trying to be polite and I DO CLEARLY UNDERSTAND YOUR POSITION THAT YOU DON'T LIKE WINDOWS.

I am been polite to you, I expect the same from you and your commnets.

Don't want to help because you don't know how, get out.

Stop confusing members.

ie

by puma - 9/27/08 10:21 PM In reply to: Internet Explorer Problem by BullBilly

billyboy,
ms had to "separate" ie from the windows as per order of the federal court but they were able to side step it by embedding (or linking) parts of the code directory back into the windows os. enough so that it has not caught the attention of the feds. you'll even notice that it is not shown in the unistall program section. hope that helps...

Unsolicited Advice

Puma girlie

Go away it did not help at all. Tell us something that we do not know already.

To everyone Else,
How can we get rid of it if we don't want IE? Thanks.

In this case

by MarkFlax Moderator - 9/28/08 3:34 AM In reply to: Unsolicited Advice by BullBilly

Puma is correct.

You cannot completely uninstall IE from Windows without dangerously destabalising the Operating System, because it is integrated into Explorer. In this context, Explorer means any of the My Computer, My Document, Outlook, Word, Windows Explorer, etc windows you may use, or the Desktop GUI itself. They all use explorer.exe found in C:\Windows.

You can hide it from view, in the Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, then the Add/Remove Windows Components. This will remove any IE icons from the Desktop and the Start menu.

But why bother? Just don't use it.

If you don't believe how difficult this is, Google "How to remove IE", and see what advice there is. Some examples;

http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10166_7-6219945-1.html

http://en.allexperts.com/q/Windows-XP-3282/remove-IE-XP.htm

So, enough of this.

One more thing. I have posted in here that any personal attacks, flaming or verbal abuse will be deleted. Your post is near the mark, but I have allowed it to stay so I can give you the low-down on removing IE.

Any more attacks will be deleted without notice.

Mark
