Glad I didnt have an ipod during Hurricane Ike!

by nreddyk - 9/17/08 5:55 PM

When the lights were out during and after the storm, I was one of the few with a mp3 player that had a FM tuner. I kept texting and shouting news and other updates to my "IPOD-DOESN'T-NEED/HAVE-BUILT-IN-FM-TUNER" friends and relatives! My Sansa comes FM standard!

This lasted for 36 hours, that's when all the batteries ran out. For next time, I have already placed an order for a hand cranked weather/AM/FM radio/flash light.

I concur about the AM/FM radio. But FM programming radio in most parts of the country sucks so I'm just as happy to pick up a cheap 5 dollar battery operated one for my emergency supplies. I had to turn the radio off after a while though as all the local FM stations were whipping everyone into a frenzy with gas and ice hysteria. They only made a bad situation worse.

Those who think land lines are the defacto must have during emergencies learned a valuable lesson during Katrina as well. Telephone lines come down with the power lines. Cell towers may be overcrowded but an SMS will usually still get through. I was in New York for the blackout of 2003 too and text messaging was the only way I could get through to my family and friends.

I plan to be down there in the next 2-3 weekends to help out with whatever I can in Clear Lake and see old friends.

Warmest wishes and blessings,

When "mandatory"-evacuated, I took my hand-cranked multiband radio flashlight with me, so no need for one on the iPod.

But, I'm definitely not claiming to be wiser: I left my home in south Texas for our ranch in northeast Texas, which "never" gets hurricanes. Well, my home didn't even get any rain, but the ranch took category 1 damage. Ike took out a few trees, utilities, and barns, but all neighbors and livestock are present and accounted for.

If you want to volunteer or donate for Gustav/Ike relief/recovery efforts but don't have friends or family in the area who have asked for your help directly, here's the site co-ordinating volunteer efforts and donations:
