There are many programs that are free that will do what you want, Kate. Besides Windows Task Manager, I like Process Explorer. For disabling or deleting startup programs, I have found the free Win Patrol very helpful, even for newbies with its Startup tab. It's very easy to understand and has other advantages too. I keep the icon in the notification (systray) area of my taskbar for my Win XP system. Go to Google and type in Win Patrol.
hi kate. when you start your pc, just go to task manager and "end process" the applications(.exe) commands you do not want to use. this will terminate the processes and boost your speed.
That's starting and manually stopping. That takes a lot of time. Better to not have them start at all. There's a lot about that in this thread.

I use a free tool called "CCLEANER" that I downloaded from Majorgeeks.com. It has options to uninstall programs, clean up unwanted files and turn off those startup programs you dont need or want running when windows starts. There is another way to turn off startup programs in windows that is somewhere in the controll panel but I dont remeber exactly so you could try useing a search engine to find it's location and how to use it.
You may use Software Explorer provided by Windows Defender, but it will work only if you are having the original Windows.
tune up utilities.google it and youll find it..i have used this for pretty much every computer ive used or been told to fix,it works great and theres many sub apps in the program.its very useful, please take the time to look
You can use Revo Unistaller, a free software with excellent interface that brings lots of utilities for PC performance. Prevents for unused applications to run at the startup, cleans all the garbage for the hard drive and others….
Anybody heard of Black Viper?

Check him out. It is the best way to disable services instead of using msconfig...
Windows Services ~ Includes complete explanations of each service and advice on which services you can safely disable.
Check this out, it is the best of all mentioned.

I inadvertantly disabled my CD-ROM drive. After trying unsuccessfully to get it going again, I finally used System Restore to get the system back to the way it was. It might be a good idea to set a restore point before you start fooling around with MSCONFIG or AUTORUNS. Use this: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
Dear Sir:
I use startup cop, which will list all running programs, and allow you some info on each one, and to disable or remove each one on the next boot.
I think I got it from zdnet or cnet, and it costs only about #20.00.
Good luck

Good evening.
I happen to use a program called WinPatrol Plus. It is a phenomenal program whereby you highlight the start up program in question & you click on the info tab. Once the info tab is enabled, a browser opens revealing detailed information on the program in question & whether or not it's safe to either disable &/or remove. The remove function does not delete the program off the hard drive, it just deletes it off the start up items.
The Plus version has a nominal fee that can be paid via Paypal. There is also a free version that can be used, however, the information tab & related documentation are not available.
Side note. I am running XP pro on my desktop & XP Media Center on my notebook & WinPatrol Plus is installed on both.
I hope this blog helps.
Regards,
Ron
The utilties you need are already on your computer.
If want to know how to stop programs from running at start up. And you have Window Defender installed go this link. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270035/
If you are trouble shooting and trying to figure out what is running in the background that slowing down your computer the best way is to go to the Start button>Run >Then Enter “msconfig” in the text box. For more on it visit this link. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310560
I would use Red700 (www.download.com/Red700/3000-2094_4-10790725.html OR http://red700.RainbowWare.com) to shut down the programs first.
It gives you a list of programs running on your PC, then the option to add each to a list and shut down them all at once. If your play a game or doing some real number crunching you can use the check box to disable the screen saver and shutdown explorer.exe
If you don't know what something is, right click the program and do a Google Lucky search. Most times the site shows you enough info to determine the validity of the program running.
Next once you have gotten the programs out of memory get a copy of Hijack this (www.download.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html) and select the ones you don't want to start up again from the list. (Warning I would be careful when removing services, use Red700 to search google to check first.)
This is pretty well all you need. Install it, sit back, and relax!
