ZoneAlarm 8 Major Problems

by huskydog137 - 9/13/08 12:33 PM

To whom it may concern. Beware - Major problems after upgrade from Version 7 to 8. Extremely slow PC Shutdown/Restart. Crashes in IE8 and Firefox 3.0 after click to Amazon.com sites. Virus/Spy update frequency settings 3,6,12 or 24 hour do nothing. Very slow startup after sleep/hibernation. No response necessary. I just wanted you to know. I know I am not the only one with these same problems. PS - I am now looking at the Kaspersky Suite.

Try stuff that's not in BETA.

IE 8 is beta. Let's wait till we see released versions. There's a lesson here.

I have similar issues...

by glenn30 - 9/13/08 1:08 PM In reply to: ZoneAlarm 8 Major Problems by huskydog137

with ZoneAlarm Firewall. Bogs the machine and slows shutdown sometimes to the point of freezing using Vista operating system. I have repeatedly over several months tried to use this software because I like the features by knowing what software can connect to the Internet.

Immediately after uninstalling the performance issue is corrected. I am now using the built-in Vista firewall with no outgoing protection. There is a way to enable outgoing in Vista but setting the rules is above my expertise. Some are recommending Comodo which I once tried but found it also a bit complicated... maybe that has changed in recent times.

Only replying to confirm what you already know... Z/A is not the firewall it once was or maybe it cannot adapt to Vista. Some do not complain for which I have no explanation but it's my experience.

Had Same problem

by pkrply9 - 9/13/08 7:11 PM In reply to: I have similar issues... by glenn30

Had same problem after the automatic udate to the new and "improved ZA Suite. The only fix I have found that works at shutdown is to shutdown the ZA first then the computer will shutdown in seconds. Mine does now.

pkrply9 ... thanks!

Your comment was invaluable to me. I installed ZA Security Suite 8.020 and had a multitude of problems. I uninstalled it according to the precise ZA instructions for uninstalling a ZA product. Rebooted and did a clean install of ZAIS 7.483. However, I started experiencing slow shutdowns. My shutdowns went from 3-10 seconds to over 5 minutes. I saw your post - thought I'd give your suggestion a try. I shutdown ZA before shutting down my system - and shutdown was instantaneous!

Slo-o-ow shutdown with ZA 8

by ves_pitman - 9/25/08 8:37 AM In reply to: pkrply9 ... thanks! by ~Patricia

Wish I had read your posting and others sooner. It really had me tearing my hair! But at my age (70) I'm lucky to have some to tear.
I tracked the problem down to ZA 8 slowly because, for some reason, that was the last thing I suppected.
As for other problems, I haven't noticed any yet. I'm not real pleased with the new page formats.

Have many good ones,

Ves-Indiana

Slow shutdown: use the CTRL key

by FatCatPeter - 9/16/08 7:09 PM In reply to: Had Same problem by pkrply9

For once a MS knowledge base entry did solve a problem: Press and hold down the Ctrl key when clicking on 'OK' (for shutdown). Works like a charm...

Problem with ZoneAlarm Suite at shutdown

by JGP131 - 9/17/08 11:48 AM In reply to: Had Same problem by pkrply9

I have the same problem with the new ZA Suite. Thank you for the information. Shutdown of ZA works for me also.

I just wonder if ZA will have a fix for this.

IE 8 Beta

by hycliff1 - 9/15/08 11:21 AM In reply to: ZoneAlarm 8 Major Problems by huskydog137

I have noticed all the complaints, but the worst problem I have (and I am not a technophile) is I can not seem able to delete this program.

Any "simple" ideas??

the problem I've encountered and isolated to Zone Alarm

by gafhptva - 9/15/08 11:35 AM In reply to: ZoneAlarm 8 Major Problems by huskydog137

I have a latency issue on WOW and poker sites that has been isolated to ZoneAlarm on a Dell XP SP3 desktop. I've been able to rule out the IP, the cable modem, and the wireless router. It was one of the last things that I suspected or believed until similar problems were encountered on some friends computers. The last patch simply made it only slightly less intermittent. I'm baffled and have found after testing everything else that when it is turned off, which is obviously done with extreme trepidation, that the problem goes away...for whatever reason. If it isn't the only cause, the problem is solved once it's turned off. I'm on the verge of trying Comodo also, figuring it's at least worth a try. I'm curious as to whether anyone else has the same or similar experiences.

Yes! I agree! After the last major upgrade, ZA seemed to be updating ALL the time. It made my computer VERY sluggish-- even just writing an email or turning a webpage. I couldn't get any work done! And ZA was saying that my subscription was up for renewal? I don't think so! Anyway, I just installed Ubuntu, http://www.ubuntu.com. It's like a "Day and Night" difference. It's great! I was even thinking about buying a new computer, but now I don't have to-- because Linux requires so much less resources and now my computer is SO MUCH FASTER! And, BTW, isn't the Security risk and target like MS Widows is. Thank God for an alternative to MS Windows! Regards, John

Per Zone Alarm Forums, they are recommending users uninstall version 8 and go back to version 7 until further notice. They are investigating slow starts, slow shut downs, etc.

Now go have a great day.
