Disk Defrag, Back Up, Windows Live Messenger Problems

I downloaded MozyHome backup program (www.mozy.com) that backs up all your files you want automatically and this worked fine for around 5 months now everytime i back up in the middle of it it freezes my pc and the same thing happens when i try and run disk defrag in the middle of it, It freezes my pc according to Norton Internet Security i don't have any viruses, adware, spyware or anything like that which leads me to think that this is a problem with my hard drive. I tried emailing the support team of Mozy and as usual no response! Another problem is with Windows Live Messenger when i click sign in sometimes that will also freeze my pc but sometimes it doesn't so i am unsure what is wrong there.
PC Specs:
All latest Windows updates.
XP Home
1.3GB RAM
80GB Hard Drive
Intel Celeron 1.46GHz Processor
Anyone have any ideas what might be wrong here??

do a full chkdsk (including check for bad sectors).
Use the graphical method from http://www.updatexp.com/windows-xp-chkdsk.html and be sure to check both boxes!
There might very well other causes, but anyway it's good to exclude the hard disk or know that that's it.
