Through the Control Panel..

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 9/13/08 6:24 AM In reply to: Could you provide instructions by Dango517

But the problem is that for some the uninstall simply doesn't work and there's no way to know until after you install and potentially lock yourself into IE8 beta until you reinstall Windows. :(

Dont do it.......

by rc06 - 9/13/08 4:40 PM In reply to: Through the Control Panel.. by John.Wilkinson Moderator

I downloaded and installed IE8 and got stuck not being able to remove it, it had endless error messages trying to use it and the to get rid of it I had to reinstall windows. I say dont try it its not worth it, its not that you just have to reinstall your os, but you have to reinstall what ever other programs you had on your computer.

Yes, in fact ...

by Ted Bruner - 9/12/08 8:53 PM In reply to: IE 8 beta, anyone using it now? by Dango517

... I have been using it for a couple of weeks, or at least as long as it has been really released for serious use. I was, at first, quite dissatisfied with it. I use 7-8 tabs, mostly for weather and NASA sites. The gov radsat requires Java, but it would hang and I couldn't close it without 3-keying.
I was so disappointed with it that I tried the ß Chrome. With the same tabs in place, I ran into problem(s) with it too, but Google was right on top of the situation and advised me to get the Java ß. I downloaded and installed it and Chrome worked nicely, but began to slow down as the days grew.
I also tried the Java ß on IE8 the same day, but to no avail. A few days later I retried it and it seemed to be working as well as anyone could expect.
Now, I'm using IE8 as my "default browser", but I do not put the two Java maps into self-update, as that does cause a bit of slight-but-acceptable mini-problems.
I still have Chrome, but it does not give me an actual "full screen". The FireFox always looks like a normal window - never a real full screen. The Chrome has all the tabs and helps on screen all the time, so it's pretty much IE8 for now.

Ie8:Two of the problems I had and how I uninstalled

by tallpeak - 9/12/08 11:02 PM In reply to: IE 8 beta, anyone using it now? by Dango517

1) ASP.NET menus no longer worked. (They use some JavaScript).

2) Javascript on many pages no longer worked. EG: Scrabble on Facebook, if I recall correctly.

I found it frustrating to use due to so many sites breaking, so I uninstalled it. You have to click "Show updates" in Add/Remove Programs to see the update.

DON'T DO IT!

by kimmybrooks - 9/16/08 6:39 AM In reply to: IE 8 beta, anyone using it now? by Dango517

I updated my IE 7 to SP3, then started having a few little problems, so then I updated to the new Beta IE8, then my problems really began...the minute my computer rebooted after installing IE8, I couldn't get on the internet. You cannot go back to IE7! So I tried restoring my system to the day prior, still problems! the IE7 was there but it was like a 'ghost' program with no operating features, [guts] then some of my other programs started glitching out on me...I even tried restoring it back to the original day I got my computer from Dell [they have a total system restore] no response...sorry to say I had to reinstall EVERYTHING, including my operating system and start over, back to the IE7 SP2, so far no problems.

Situation getting worse

by Dango517 - 9/30/08 5:43 AM In reply to: IE 8 beta, anyone using it now? by Dango517

For months now we've been having a problem with Adobe 9 reloading on many pages while using IE7. This has been an annoyance mostly and thou it takes a little time and slows down the flow of things we have lived with it. This appears to be an installer problem with the "down loaded programs" installer, ActiveX. Over the course of the last few days IE7 has begun to hang on web pages, not crash. I just attempted to re-install it. ( Something I really do not wish to do because this might mean I have to re-install my search engines, and loose my search history and favorites. ) Vista comes with IE7 pre-installed and there is not an option to down load it from Microsoft for Vista, so, I can overwrite my copy.

I have registry repair software and it did not repair it, so, this option has been used up. I may have little choice but to install IE8 or as Kees has suggested roll back to 6, if this is possible using Vista, till IE8 is ready.

The rest of my OS is running with only a few minor problems so re-installing the OS is not an option. I think I've mentioned this; I use AT&T DSL service with very few Browser options, none better then IE.

In other words "damned if I do, damned if I don't".

More then likely, I will choose IE8 over IE6 as my option.

If your problem is Adobe Reader ...

by Kees Bakker Moderator - 9/30/08 5:48 AM In reply to: Situation getting worse by Dango517

forget about that and use (equally free) foxit reader. An older version of Adobe reader might be a solution also. I'ms still happy with version 7 on XP.

I just might use that suggestion but the real problem is those hangs/freezes. (The adobe problem is but annoyance.) I think this is due to corruption in the IE7 program and needs a clean install of IE7 but it is not provided on the Microsoft's IE web site for Vista. This is the problem.

In that case

by MarkFlax Moderator - 9/30/08 12:29 PM In reply to: Thank you, Kees by Dango517

you may have to 'bite the bullet' and remove all those addons.

This is the type of advice we often give when anyone reports problems with IE. More often than not, other than system wide virus infections, IE works fine in its basic form, but with BHOs, ActiveX and toolbars like Yahoo and Google, it can fall over, and you get the problems you are experiencing.

I know that you would rather not lose those search utilities, but if they are causing the problems then perhaps you are better off removing them. You can always reinstall them one at a time, making sure the browser is stable after each.

IE7 has a useful option, in Tools > Internet options > Advanced tab, for resetting it to default. This removes all extras, and a reboot afterwards might solve the difficulties your IE is going through.

After weeks of hobbling along with a defective IE7

by Dango517 - 10/9/08 6:09 PM In reply to: IE 8 beta, anyone using it now? by Dango517

We have thrown in the towel and installed IE8. The options were these ... re-boot/re-install the OS, revert to IE6 or go ahead and install IE8. We have chosen IE8 over the other options. So far, so good, with one slight hitch .... IE8 crashed during installation but installed on it's second attempt. Minor problems .... Had a bit of a time finding my search engines (at least they were there and in tact.) and adjusting the image size to fit my screen. These done we're now ready to put it through it's paces.

On the good side it's faster, at least so far.

Wish me luck, I may need it.

After a few hours use ..........

by Dango517 - 10/9/08 8:32 PM In reply to: After weeks of hobbling along with a defective IE7 by Dango517

My Internet Explorer 7 installation was certainly the problem. It hasn't hung once in hours of use. This had become a major problem with hanging every few minutes and was terribly annoying. These would bring web searches to an absolute crawl at times and at other times would crash altogether requiring a restart of IE.

Now for the initial problems:

Can run the Goggle search bar but not from Windows Mail. The mail links will not work with goggle as the default search engine. I've already found a work around, however, just log on to the Net using The IE icon on the desktop first then open Windows Mail and the links work fine. Far less trouble then those hangs.

Will not run Realplayer thou it says all you need to do is run it and it will send an update but "no" update comes when you use it. I'll save that fix for another day.

Note: Google search and Realplayer are/where my default search engine/video program. :( Figures don't it!

It is, so far, much better then when I used it several months ago.

I have immediately remove one of it's new feature "suggested sites". I can find my own sites, thank you very much. Might be good for the greenest newbie thou.

Well I'm back again

by Dango517 - 10/9/08 9:42 PM In reply to: Not good! by Dango517

No IE6 is unavailable. So I removed IE8 using the instruction above from M$. Seems to be OK, looks like IE7. I can copy and paste again. It will be interesting to see if this doesn't fix IE7. This is a long shot but I'm guessing it will. I'll let you know.

Now about this from a previous post:

"Can run the Goggle search bar but not from Windows Mail. The mail links will not work with goggle as the default search engine. I've already found a work around, however, just log on to the Net using The IE icon on the desktop first then open Windows Mail and the links work fine. Far less trouble then those hangs."

This is a compatibility issue between IE8 and Window Mail. If it work when IE is open then it should work if it is closed unless IE8 and Windows Mail are out of sync. Come on Microsoft.

This is not good, looks like I'll be doing a 11 hour reboot of my OS if this doesn't work.

BTW, Bob that guy the other day wasn't having a hard drive problem exclusively. He was having this problem as well. Remember he said he could play games (I'm guessing online, he would not say) but he was having problems with the Net. Mine does the same thing. Connects to a virtual world with hardly a hitch but runs terrible on the Net. Games and virtual worlds connect directly to serves and by pass the Net entirely, so, no IE to go through.
