Audio and video skipping

by scuuba - 9/5/08 5:33 PM

Hey guys,

I own an HP dv5000 notebook running Windows xp MCE 2005, with 1024 mb of ram and a 120gb hdd. The computer is about 2 1/2 years old. I recently performed a system restore on it and about 2 days later, my audio and video started skipping. Any advice on how this happened and what to do about it would be appreciated...thanks.

Use system restore again.

Not the operating system system restore, just the SR noted at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

No luck...

I thought of doing this first, unfortunately, I can't access and respore points prior to the system restore anymore.

Why is that?

Any clues why SR is locked up?

I don't know. I won't let me go past the middle of August to access one...would an OS sytem restore delete those prior restore points?

Locked up. Sorry but be clear as you can be here since one thing is not the other. As it stands I don't have a quick fix.

Sorry about not being clear. That's alright, you never know, I might be able to convince my fiancee to let me go out and buy a new one!

Something I try

The DMA issue is noted at http://winhlp.com/node/10

This issue is a recurring one but I offer this since I can't get a clear view of the SR issue. Maybe you have Norton or some other software installed but any error message was not shared (just lock up) so I can't tell if that applies here.

I'll try it...

Anything at this point, my dvd drive doesn't spin either so maybe this will fix that too (I doubt it, it stopped working after I dropped the computer). I uninstalled Norton and installed AVG, so I don't think it would be causing any problems.

Thanks for that clue.

My dad's machine was running poorly. I ran a few scans for malware then he told me the CDRW drive was failing. Ah, wish I had known that. I powered down and removed the power and wide data cable from the failed drive. The machine booted up faster and things ran well. There's a lesson here.

Don't drop expensive and sensitive machinery?

I learned that one a bit ago. That's not when the skipping had started so I didn't think to give it a second thought. The drive completely failed about 2 or 3 weeks before the skipping started. I guess I have nothing to lose by opening the computer up...though I haven't seen the guts of a computer since comp. repair class in high school10 years ago.
