Is LG Dare's GPS Limited to Navigator?

by jlefler - 7/21/08 5:15 PM In reply to: LG Dare Vs. Iphone by esteban28

Does anyone know if the Dare's GPS can be used outside of the VZNavigator monthly subscription?

What is EVDO REV A and what does it do?

Post 79 of 99

EVDO Revision A in a nutshell

by electronista - 7/21/08 5:58 PM In reply to: Dare detail by itasara

EVDO (Evolution Data Only) is a form of 3G cellular data access; Revision A is a sequel to EVDO that improves both download and upload speeds without changing much of the same technology.

In short, it means faster Internet access on the phone. EVDO Rev A is roughly as fast as the HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) format used for 3G by AT&T.

bad phone?

by jlefler - 7/25/08 2:43 PM In reply to: crap by mercenarygod

Is it possible you received a defective phone? I've only seen one negative review about the dare and was planning on getting one. I would be really disappointed if I had your experience!

Probably. I might exchange it for a new one.

Yes, it's possible to get a defective Dare

by Roxstar1251 - 9/6/08 7:17 PM In reply to: bad phone? by jlefler

I purchased the Dare yesterday after 4 separate and irritating visits to several Verizon locations, Corporate and non corporate stores.
It seems as I will be returning for a 5th visit.

I hadn'r received a phone call for a full day, which is rare, so I dialed out - did not connect. Verizon was unable to authenticate the phone. However, I could call my cell phone and I could receive calls. I reset the phone and contacted Verizon to give some technical assistance. We auto programmed and hand programmed the phone. Same problem. I was told that the phone was defective and I should return it back to the corporate store from where I purchased the unit.

Wanda, my technician was about as nice and helful as anyone could possibly be. She was knowledgeable and pulled out every trick in the book to try to get it to work. She did indicate that it is a rarity to get a defective phone, but it does happen.

I'm thinking about switching phones and manufacturers. I love the phone but I'm turned off with having to go back again. Thinking about Flipshot. Less technology, but it's just a phone, right?!

This is such a late reply..BUT, I have had 4 defective DARES

by IDAREYOU - 9/29/08 4:35 PM In reply to: Yes, it's possible to get a defective Dare by Roxstar1251

In talks with LG, I have learned certain facts that Verizon doesn't particularly care to share. It is not just the Verizon-specific spftware applications such as V-CAST, My Account, etc. that were designed by Verizon engineers...ALL the software...EVERYTHING from the moment you activate the phone...the keypad, your contact list, the format of text messages...everything is Verizon created. LG created the DARE to hold the software that Verizon engineers requested. So, when a Tech at Verizon sympathizes and states that yes, the Recent Call function doesn't work as described, it's "because we're waiting for a software upgrade from LG", THIS IS NOT TRUE. Supervisors have advised me that many techs have NEVER seen a DARE and there are no "emulators" for them to use. So, they refer us to LG whose staff appears unhelpful because they cannot answer software issues. Your decision to consider the FLIPSHOT is fine. I am trying to like the DARE but the FLIPSHOT, which I had previously has many superior features including Speech-to-Text (you speak your text msgs and they appear as text), Whisper Mode, an excellent camera (althought it lacks the A990 and DARE's ability to capture a video frame as a photo). The FLIPSHOT has no QUERTY keypad and only very very limited URL capacity. BUT, when you say "its just a phone" you are on track. I wish I had waited 6 months for Verizon to work out the kinks in the DARE as they now have done in the VOYAGER which is about to be re-released in a Titanium, Rhapsody-capable model. Oh, well

I have an iPhone 3G right now, it is really amazing, and has so many wonderfull features. The only complaint I have is that I need a working phone. I get dropped calls and MANY missed calls (people keep calling, but it never rings on my end). Great "I", horrible "phone". Well, it is back to Verizon for me.

Called Verizon, and they said they dont know how to sync Outlook to Dare, passed the buck and said to call LG.

Called LG www.lgmobilephones.com 800.793.8896 and they said nope, and also passed the buck saying they have a third party company working on this named Data Pilot.

Called Data Pilot www.datapilot.com CSR=866.787.8336 Tech=800.282.3678 and they passed the buck, er, no wait, they said they expect to have the contact sync released on Aug. 15th, 2008 and they are also expecting (perhaps not at the same time) to sync up calender and other media too!

I would normally wait till that is released to get the Dare, but that would be after my 30 day allowed iphone return, so I gotta make the leap of faith. The Dare is incredible, a phone, that actually makes phone calls. *drools* Hope the friends I made from the hours of waiting at Apple store enjoy the apps while I am *talking* on the phone.

iphone sucks

by peaber - 8/9/08 11:00 AM In reply to: LG DARE vs Iphone by useyourbrain

iphone slips out of your hand way to easy and iphones full keyboard is on half a screen. dars full keyboard is almost on a whole screen on dare u can take panorama pics. when u text on dare u start out on a nonfull keyboard but turn the phone sideways and it changes to a fullkeybord automatically

I object here

by electronista - 8/9/08 11:50 AM In reply to: iphone sucks by peaber

The iPhone 3G is quite comfortable in my hand; I don't know what's up with yours.

Also, the area of the keyboard only means so much. I can punch out text on the iPhone's keyboard about as fast as on a hardware keyboard, and probably just as quickly as on a Dare, too. About the only advantage is the landscape mode for all text, not just the web.

The Dare does take panorama photos, too, which is appreciated. But I wouldn't give up a better web browser and music player on the iPhone just for that.

iphone experiences for a couple weeks

by itasara - 9/6/08 10:18 PM In reply to: I object here by electronista

Ok, I do like my Iphone, but it is NOT perfect. I found a small device in an online store which is a touch stylus for iphone.... I like it because it makes typing much easier as the stylus is much smaller than my fingers! The more I use the <<virtual>> keyboard on the Iphone, the easier it is becoming, but it assumes I want certain words when I don't and I don't know if I can turn that feature off to second guess my words. Sometimes I want to say <<its>> without the apostrophe but the keyboard always fills it in for me as <<it's.>>

I am quite worried about the battery... it does drain quickly when I use certain features. I have a charger set up in my car, so at least when I am out, I can keep it charged, but I do think these batteries should be replaceable much easier then sending it back for about $89.00.

Often when I am talking to someone, I accidentally touch my ear to the screen and then I end up calling someone else I didn't want to call or I put my current holder on hold. I find that really irritating.

I like mobile me, but it is a bit pricey, but my calendar on my computers are always up to date. That is a great feature. I got the AIM free app and that is kind of nice also.

I have a friend to bought the Iphone, and her husband bought a blackberry, She had reservations about the IPHONE as well. So she and her husband switched phones for a day, after which she went back to her IPHONE and decided she LOVES it now. She really hated the blackberry.

As an ipod, I'm a little disappointed because the iphone is after all much bigger at least bigger than my nano. Also, again, when I am listening to it, the battery seems to drain right before my eyes. That does NOT happen with my ipod!!! So I was going to not keep my ipod, but I think now I'll have to keep it around.

But yes, It's fun to have and I'll see if it is going to eat me out of house and home by the time my two years are up. My husband did return his IPHONE. It was too techy for him. He just wants a phone.
