Inside your Utilities folder, you'll find Disk Utility. Run "Repair Disk Permissions" every few months, or after a crash. In cases where this doesn't fix your problem, boot from your install disk, start up Disk Utility and run "Repair Disk."
If you want some excellent, bootable repair disks, get Disk Warrior, Drive Genius, or TechTool Pro.
But as this is a Mac you've got, you'll rarely run into extreme problems. Just the same, it's a good idea to have (and use for regular maintenance) one of these disk utilities.
Good luck!
After years of going nuts with Windows computers, I went to Mac 5 years ago and now have 2 [one upstairs and one downstairs] and have very little to do in maintenance. I use Onyx and/or MainMenu, which I'd say takes care of all my maintenance and both of which are free downloads from http://www.versiontracker.com - should you decide to try these, check for OS compatibility since Panther, Tiger and Lepard use differing models of Onyx. Macs have a built in maintenance tool called DISK UTILITY [Applications/Utilities] and I often use the free applejack program from sourceforge at startup, and runs automatically and quickly. From what I understand, keeping permissions correct seems to be perhaps the most important or one of the most important factor to maintain correctly. Macs are soooooooooooo easy and these maintenance programs are sooooooooooo easy and fast! I have never had any trouble with my Macs with these maintenance programs.
