Gates and Seinfeld, no Martin and Lewis!

by tomstar3000 - 9/5/08 8:46 AM

Did you guys see the Microsoft Commercial? I just saw it last night for the first time. Not as funny as I thought it could be, but it wasn't too bad

Post 2 of 10

As painfully unfunny as in the 90's.

by Papa Chango - 9/5/08 9:21 AM In reply to: Gates and Seinfeld, no Martin and Lewis! by tomstar3000

Watched tennis at a friend's TV and I knew this commercial was in the works but I didnt let them know until the ad finished.

To say that the reaction was bad last night is an understatement.
Even people who used to watch Seinfeld over a decade ago found it painful to watch.

The next commercial will feature them doing that really hot "Where's the Beef?" meme that all the kids are spouting these days.

300 millions worth of these commercials?
Thank god some companies have more money than brains.

There is no such thing as bad press when it comes to ads

If they didn't have to pay for Jerry Seinfeld, maybe they could afford better production. What does it matter though if people are actually talking about it.

Not in this case

by urisage - 9/5/08 11:53 AM In reply to: There is no such thing as bad press when it comes to ads by tomstar3000

"All press is good press" is especially untrue in this case - when Microsoft is running these ads in large part to solve a perception issue that exists mostly because of bad press.

People talking about the ads or talking about Vista because of the ads isn't necessarily a good thing any more than people talking about Vista has been in general up to this point.

I don't know if I agree...

I think "any press is good press" totally applies here. Microsoft ain't changing any minds with Vista. People already tainted with the viewpoint that Vista is broken will stay that way. I think Microsoft (begrudgingly) understands that to a certain degree. Probably why they don't try to paint Vista as misunderstood in this ad.

What Microsoft accomplishes here is reaching those people who either don't know or don't care. To them, Microsoft has a (debatably) witty commercial compared to... compared to what other commercials have you even seen for Microsoft lately? And what other commercial have you seen for Microsoft that has gotten ANYONE talking in the way that this one has already.

Seems like mission accomplished to me.

it was pretty funny and much ado about nothing, just like sienfeld's show, right? i laughed and thought to myself. wow bill gates is so rich, lol.

why convince ppl vista is good? its been out long enough that ppl have their opinion. i think its just good to see microsoft on tv...

The ads is not only for vista or answering apple

I agree that ads is to get people talking. I think the ads hope to re-brand window as technology fits your whole life.

Window has become a platform for entertainment+gaming, communication, work anywhere....etc.
Window is not just PC. MS Window for everything in your life. They have move on from PC to everywhere/anywhere. Hence only the last portion they have that 'cake' PC. Cheers

I Think it is a Good Start

by smaegley - 9/5/08 3:18 PM In reply to: Gates and Seinfeld, no Martin and Lewis! by tomstar3000

So what ad could have Microsoft put together that any apple fan boy would love? None. They aren't trying to flip you back from a Mac, they are trying to stop the bleeding. MS is setting the stage here. They aren't diving into specifics, they are just introducing you to the characters. I watched the ad and thought it was funny. Not bubble boy funny, but funny.

This is the first ad in a huge campaign. $300,000,000 huge. Seinfeld is being paid reportedly $10 mil. It is going to take a lot change the direction of this PR nightmare for MS, but you have to start somewhere.

The comments on all of the blogs are very negative, like some of those here, and I'm not surprised. MS could turn into Apple overnight and everyone would hate them still. It's like politics, (actually, it is too similar) no matter what the candidate of the "other" party says, die hard party liners still hate him. They aren't trying to convince you, they are trying to convince that guy you talk to that asks you, "I think I want to buy a Mac, is that a good computer?"

Lets re-evaluate this in 6 to 12 months.

It was funny...

by Woadan - 9/6/08 9:18 AM In reply to: Gates and Seinfeld, no Martin and Lewis! by tomstar3000

I laughed out loud when I saw it, and I still grin when I think about it.

You won't change people's minds overnight, and I think we will start to see, as more spots appear, where Microsoft is going with this. (Don't forget, the charm of the Apple ads is more in the aggregate than in the individual ads themselves.) I would expect that things will get more direct as more ads come out.
