Natalie DelConte - Regular Guest Host, Yea or Nay?

by arlohepz - 9/3/08 10:35 PM

I have to say I am not happy about the prospect of Natalie being on BOL once a week. I think she is tech savvy enough but I don't think she has the right personality for the show. Also I find the high pitch of her voice uncomfortable to listen to.
I absolutely do not want anyone to say anything unkind here. I just want to know how other Buzztowners are feeling about the prospect of Natalie being on the show once a week since it was discussed on the 9/3/08 episode.

I think Natali will be a good regular guest. I really like Loaded and I think she is a good, clear fourth voice. Which, by the way, doesn't bother me.

Yea!

Guest hosts change the energy of the show and JAMOTO seem to brighten up when another is in the room.

My only concern is that the show goes off the rails a bit when guests are in the studio. BOL is snappy, smart, and entertaining and I am wary of anything that could significantly change the texture of the show. There are already enough podcasts that are primarily chucklefests with a little information thrown in...

Nay

by The_Noid - 9/4/08 8:02 AM In reply to: Yea! by PressAnyKey

I don't think she's needed or particularly entertaining. Tom, Molly, and Jason have a good dynamic that keeps the show moving forward - adding a guest has one of two effects:
1. The guest is barely there (ie, chimes in once in a while) which is pointless
2. The guest disrupts the flow.

Neither is needed. Let NDC do her own show with her own flow and guest host when/if someone is out sick.

Nay Natali DelConte & Nay Regular 4th Host

by Lazu22 - 9/4/08 9:41 PM In reply to: Nay by The_Noid

Ditto to The_Noid's comment "I don't think she's needed or particularly entertaining"

I also agree with the original poster's comments about Natali's voice. Maybe high frequencies affect different people in different ways but personally I wince a bit whenever she speaks.

I don't want to sound negative because I'm really trying to say something positive and that is that I like the show the way it is. I don't think a regular fourth host would be an improvement. Sure an occasional guest is fine but don't mess with the great dynamic of the Jamoto trio.

I like her

She brings a decent amount of knowledge to the table. She's smart and funny unlike the grating Brian Tong.

Guest hosts in general and Natalie specifically

by Slikkster - 9/4/08 8:58 AM In reply to: Natalie DelConte - Regular Guest Host, Yea or Nay? by arlohepz

The problem I have is that JaMoTo pretty much have timing down pat. They know each other very well, and know each other's rhythms. Guest hosts or additional hosts can break that timing and rhythm.

I think Natalie has a very sweet voice. She just sounds "cute" to me. What I mean is that if I never saw a picture of her and just heard her voice, I would get that impression. I wish I could describe it better, and without sounding sexist or whatever. But that doesn't mean I want to hear her all the time on the podcast.

I think one of the problems with her, too, is that she normally joins the podcast on an audio ISDN line from NYC, so she doesn't get the visual cues from being in the same room with the others. And no matter what; there's always a slight delay with ISDN, and that can make for people stepping on each other's commentaries.

Agree/Disagree

It does sound like Natali doesn't have the "LET ME TALK OR I WILL STAB YOUR EYES OUT IF YOU DON'T" attitude that Tom and Molly have but I don't find her voice annoying or anything. She does indeed a great job in NY doing Loaded and she knows enough to be on the show. I find it entertaining indeed though. It's a fresh thing to have other Cnet people on the show. I wouldn't mind having Bonnie Cha and Jasmine France reviewing the new ipod next week either.

Tom & Molly

by Renegade Knight - 9/4/08 11:45 AM In reply to: Natalie DelConte - Regular Guest Host, Yea or Nay? by arlohepz

Tom & Molly anchor the show. They have a good dynamic. A guest roated in changes it. Mixing it up is good. Some mixes work better than others. The same guest can be good or bad depending on which host they replace because of the dynamic with the remaining host.

Originally I came to this show because of Veronica. I stayed because of Molly & Tom. Guests are fine for their purpose. When they stop being a guest though the show itself is changed.

I was also hoping for Kelly to guest host BOL when she comes back. And DEFINETLY Lindsey Turrentine. I'm a huge gadgettes listener (along with BOL) and that would be awesome!

I actually love her voice, like some other poster said, it sounds really cute. She doesn't add that much, but she is new, and the guys have a great dynamic between them. I don't think adding a new voice, even adding a new voice daily, will break the show, it just prevents it from becoming stale. I don't know if it is a good idea to fix a day for each guest, as that will make it less of a guest and more of a routine, but I do love her voice.

No ...but nothing against NDC

by rosscbrown - 9/4/08 8:02 PM In reply to: Natalie DelConte - Regular Guest Host, Yea or Nay? by arlohepz

I love NDC and I wish I could get Loaded as audio only as I love her voice. I say no only because I'm not too hot on having a 'regular' guest host.

I enjoy checking the podcast to find a guest but one every day? Diminishing returns if you ask me.

Guest hosts are fun but have their problems. They can't be expected to be up to date with the show and thus they often bring up things that have been talked about before.

Keep it random guys.
