DRM Free music... outside USA?

by AndersLund - 8/29/08 10:47 PM

Hi there,

I'm glad that the music labels are selling DRM free music, but as a Dane, I can't get it. I have tried a couple of places and usually get the message "We're sorry but you cannot purchase tracks from outside the United States."

Could someone please tell me where I can get DRM free music?

/Anders

Okay, let me clarify...

by AndersLund - 8/30/08 1:40 AM In reply to: hmm by aTales

Okay, let me clarify: I want a place where I can buy all the music DRM free. I'm not big with music and probably mostly buy the music i hear in the radio. The problem is iTunes and other stores available to me don't have much of the music i hear in the radio.

The music industry might get better in the USA, but for the rest of the world, it's still very bad (in my opinion).

Screwed, just as Me, I'm from the Netherlands and the closest thing to drm free music is iTunes plus (or pirating)

Thank you for the comment .. I guess I just hoped that I might have overlooked some shop somewhere.

I think it kind of sucks, when you can go to the piratebay and download all the stuff there.

Shame on the content providers for not providing us content.

Have you tried MP3 Fiesta?

by The_Noid - 9/1/08 10:49 PM In reply to: Okay by AndersLund

I think it's Ukranian - tracks sell for 10 cents and albums are usually just under $1.00 - all music is MP3 completely DRM free.
Emusic also has no DRM - but you really need to like Indie Music because they don't have too much in the way of strictly top 40 stuff.

Artists don't need music sales...

by Nicholas Buenk - 8/30/08 11:47 PM In reply to: Great way to starve the artists? by R. Proffitt Moderator

They have concerts. Purpose of paying for music is to support the recording studios and equipment, and I don't see why that requires $20 an album! It's a scam.

Totally Wrong!

by Slikkster - 8/31/08 6:36 AM In reply to: Artists don't need music sales... by Nicholas Buenk

Artists don't need music sales? That's an interesting take. While the total amount of money charged on Itunes, et. al., is certainly a question that can be argued, what CAN'T be argued is that artists don't require music sales.

Yes, concerts can and do generate income. But then again, not every artist wants to go out on concert. So, they should give away their music for free?
Plus, there's potentially a helluva lot of overhead $$$ in concerts, depending upon the act.

Many artists make their money by and large from royalties and licensing fees. Again, does that justify what Itunes charges? I'm not making that argument.

There's an excellent article by David Byrne of Talking Heads fame in a past Wired publication. It makes for a great read, and explains a lot.

http://www.wired.com/entertainment/music/magazine/16-01/ff_byrne?currentPage=all

One thing is patently clear in it, however: Artists need royalties and licensing fees to make their living, by and large. While he does say the conventional wisdom that touring/concerts is for promotional reasons only is dead wrong, he does, indeed, cite the importance of royalties and licensing fees:

"If the members of the Talking Heads held the master rights to our catalog today, we'd earn twice as much in licensing as we do now — and that's where artists like me derive much of our income."

Why not?

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 8/31/08 6:43 AM In reply to: Artists don't need music sales... by Nicholas Buenk

It's very simple. This is basic commerce here. There is a product and there is a seller and buyer. If the price is too high you don't buy it.

Why not dispense with all this and just bring it down to commerce? If you find a way to get it cheap, so be it. If you happen to not like the price, don't buy. The price will eventually go down.

But to give money to those that appear to be thieves would not be the answer.

They would seem to disagree. I have used it for almost a year now and have never had a problem.

The issue is one you should explore.

The money isn't making its way back to the musicians and/or copyright holders. Its quite simple why this is. You choice here.

Sony Ericsson just launched a nordic store

by SPIRIdk - 8/30/08 9:09 AM In reply to: DRM Free music... outside USA? by AndersLund

As a fellow Dani I feel your pain!

On Monday Sony Ericsson lunched their Play Now Arena, which is an MP3 only store. If I recall correctly they have deals with every major label besides Universal. They don't have a insane amount of tracks yet, but it should improve over time.
It's only available in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland.

Find it at http://playnowarena.com (just click Skip this page to get to the store).

When you sign up you have to specify which Sony Ericsson phone you own. I think this is due to the fact that the store also sells themes and such for mobiles, the choice however, shouldn't affect the music selection, so if you do not have a SE phone, just pick one at random.

PS: Fedt at møde andre danskere herinde! :)

Great

Thank you for the tip - I will check it out some more. I'm already impressed with the few things I have seen so far on their site. And the price looks like its iTunes level = 8 DKK ~ 1,50 USD.

PS: Ja, vi er alligevel et par stykker som begiver os ud på det store Internet. :)

Even Canadians....

by silverblade - 9/1/08 12:19 PM In reply to: DRM Free music... outside USA? by AndersLund

Even as a Canadian, it's hard finding DRM-Free music stores that we have access too. EVERY STORE is only accessed by Americans.

Even though iTunes is available, not everything there is DRM-Free
