Sony KDL-52WL135 at Costco

by Opey1 - 1/24/08 2:53 PM In reply to: Sony Sony tvs vs. Costco Sony tvs by desertsunangell

Like the smaller Sony model discussed in this thread, Costco now has a 52" FPD, the Sony KDL-52WL135, a "Bravia 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV", which is not listed on Sony's web sites, nor anywhere else in the Google searches I've tried, for that matter. Does anyone know where I can find information on this unit, how it compares with the similar *official* Sony offerings (Sony Bravia KDL-52XBR4, Sony Bravia KDL-52XBR5)? Has anyone bought one? How is it? Thanks! I'm trying to help my elderly parents make an informed purchase, and this is a deep dive into expensive technology for them.

Answering my own question:), I found links to the marketing spec's on this unit:

AVS Forum:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=980982

Within the body of the forum, contributors listed the following specific documents...
Sony's web info:

Sony's marketing spec's (12/11/07):

Thanks! I'll get back if we purchase one or if i find out anything that might be of particular interest.

KDL-52WL135 and MotionFlow

by ocbythebay - 2/10/08 5:29 AM In reply to: Links to info on Costco's Sony kdl-52wl135 by Opey1

Looks like Opey1 was correct. I guess with the new Sonys coming out in May, they've decided to release motion flow on the Costco model. It must be pretty new though because the refurb stores who sell the Costco (and other discout stores)returns don't have any of these yet.

costco/sony number solved???

by btmccarthy - 4/15/08 2:33 PM In reply to: Sony KDL-52WL135 at Costco by Opey1

All,
I read the threads here when I was assisting a friend buying a Sony TV (40VL130) in January and now I'm looking at the Sony 46WL135 or 46VL130 for myself. After doing a fair amount of searching, reading and comparing it appears to me that the "L" in the name might well stand for Limited. As an example, the VL is essentially the V3000 with a few perks normally found on the W3000. Likewise the WL is essentially the W3000 TV with the 120Hz function of the XBR4. So it appears that both of these HDTVs are special editions of the series with a couple of bonus features. They don't directly equate to the V or W series -- they're in-between models. If you doubt my interpretation, find their manuals and spec sheets on line from one of the big box stores or Sony and then compare them point by point with the specs for the V, W, and XBR series. You'll see that they fall in between.

Happy shopping and viewing!

Sears vs Costco

by fletches67 - 2/15/08 7:13 AM In reply to: Sony Sony tvs vs. Costco Sony tvs by desertsunangell

I don't know about the model nos. but I would definitely choose Costco over Sears as they have excellent warranty and return policy.

I have the KDL-52WL135 from costco

by HDperfectionist - 5/23/08 11:38 AM In reply to: Sony Sony tvs vs. Costco Sony tvs by desertsunangell

I have the KDL-52WL135 from costco, and it is indeed 120Hz, but I still think for 3000$ this picture should be a little better. I have been debating on exchanging for a mitsubishi 120Hz model, but I heard the Mitsu is one of the worst 120Hz models. I really would like to know how this TV compares to the Sony XB 4 and 5 models. The 120Hz makes it look almost as if the characters are popping out the screen still sometimes I see skips when the picture pans around someone occasional noise and degading of clarity. Kind of pisses me off. I want to either exchange or return and get another that is actually a 3000$ picture, what I paid. Only problem is best buy sells em for about 3000$ BUT you have to purchase a warranty for for about 600$ which is a complete rip off, and costco's is FREE.

Costco is clearing out VL135 tv's : 46 and 52 inch sizes

by systemBuilder - 9/1/08 11:28 AM In reply to: I have the KDL-52WL135 from costco by HDperfectionist

I was at costco (Carmel Mountain, in San Diego) yesterday, and the Sony 46 Model 135VL is $1899, and the Sony 52" Model 135VL is $2599. Both have 120 Hz motionflow, 10-bit displays, and as discussed earlier, they do it with a 'Bravia EX' engine, not a 'Bravia 2' engine of the XBR 4/5. Contrast is 16000:1 vs. 18000:1 of an XBR4/5. Other than that, I don't think there is much difference. I think that side by side, the differences between XBR 4/5 and VL135 would be slight, and might require a special blue-ray title to be noticed ....

Both TV's appear to be a screaming good deal, and of course they were the best looking TV's at Costco. At Fry's the XBR4/5's are always the best looking TV's, with about 50 different large-panel TV's (40" and above) available for comparison.

I am VERY tempted to go out and snarf up a VL135 in the 46" size, as 52" is probably too large for our living room and sitting distance.

You should wait a little longer

by HDperfectionist - 9/1/08 1:29 PM In reply to: Costco is clearing out VL135 tv's : 46 and 52 inch sizes by systemBuilder

the XBR 4 and 5 will be on sale soon as well. Dont waste your money on the costco model. The bravia EX engine does NOT put out 120hz, You can look it up on sony's site. As far as Im concerned costco falsely advertises 120HZ on the sony box in their stores. When you set VL next to the XBR you notice a HUGE difference, not a little one. I have the XBR and used to have the VL 52 inch. Huge difference. Motionflow is horrible on the VL.

Costco Sony TVs - are they real?

by JM2607 - 10/4/09 10:04 AM In reply to: Sony Sony tvs vs. Costco Sony tvs by desertsunangell

I just purchased a Sony 46 inch HD TV from Costco which looked to have the best picture of those models I was evaluating from a number of retail sources. I live in a high rise condo where the HD source comes from a Dish network satellite which has proven to be unreliable (I am stuck with dish network unfortunately)The picture is OK not great even after changing cables and turning off light sensor etc. So here I am figuring it is the signal. I was in a "high end" audio store yesterday and the 46 XBR tv was on and the picture was fabulous. I asked them for their settings and explained my predicament. They just laughed - saying that the Costco Sonys are NOT real Sony's- they are knock offs and made in China and not in a Sony factory. I was shocked. I am getting ready to pack this tv up and take it back to Costco. Are these tvs like the "rolexes" one can buy on the streets of NYC?

Costco Sony

by Dan Filice - 10/4/09 1:29 PM In reply to: Costco Sony TVs - are they real? by JM2607

The Jerk-Holes at that "High End" Audio Video store don't know what they are talking about. The Costco TVs have a slightly different model number so they don't interfere with retail store prices. When I bought a Panasonic BR player at Costco, it had one letter difference from the one at Best Buy, but it came with a free HDMI cable that Best Buy wanted another $50 for. I contacted Panasonic and they said it was EXACTLY the same BR player that BB sells. You can call Sony Customer Service and ask them about the model you bought. Didn't you look at the Owner's Manual and the Warranty card that came with your TV?? You can register your TV with Sony online (and you should). So why would Sony offer the same warranty on a Costco model that they do on the other TVs?
