I also get radio interference

by joecav654 - 7/31/08 4:27 AM In reply to: Reply to Jack9j by bexteck

Hi my neighbor has been around here longer than I. We are good friends in the past and I should have no problems talking to him. But I don't even know if it's his ham or my radio's. He has a huge tower and it used to interfere with the cable a long time ago, not now.I have 3 cars on a ford 95 aerostar(reception is perfect on am/fm), a 95 gmc safari(new radio bad reception on am)(seems to be coinciding with the engine and increases with the gas pedal being pushed) and my new car a 2003 hyuandi (am has interference and dosen't seem to coincide with the gas/ignition). I think I have three differnet situations here but can anyone point the cause/solution to me? thank you

Remember, a tower in and of itself can't cause interference. It is the RF emitted from an antenna when your neighbor transmits which could potentially cause problems. This means that interference from your neighbor would occur for several seconds at a time separated by breaks where he would be listening to someone talking back to him. If your interference is constant and occurs almost all the time then its not your neighbor. (He won't be on the radio all the time)

The interference you hear with the Safari is definitely from the vehicle, probably electrical noise from the ignition coil and spark plug wires.

The Hundai could be from something in the vehicle but could be something external too. It could be something in your house causing the problem. I get terrible interference with a Belkin switch and its not even wireless.

Since very few people listen to AM radio anymore, car manufacturers may have gotten lax in the shielding which is required to keep interference out since it would only effect very few people.

Remember, unless it sounds like your listening to half of a conversation, it won't be someone on a ham radio.

Hope this helps.

for the 95 gmc safari w/ the new system, could be the battery is not big enough to power the car + the new system, the alternator could just be starting to go or the battery is just needs to be replaced (check the date on the battery they are normaly good for about 5-7 years). It could also be feedback from the cars electrical system, if it is that, you would have to talk to the installer.

for the 2003 hyuandi, mostliky just needs a better antenna

A few things checked

by joecav654 - 8/30/08 8:05 PM In reply to: ... by givemeaname

I checked a few things on the hyuandi. The battery reads 12.8v dc checked with a digital multimeter. and with the car running reads 13.5v dc. now I did some more detective work and there is one channel that comes in real clear. It is the one that is local. all other channels are interfierd with by something because the further away I get from my county the better am comes in. Any ideas?

Farther away from your county? Thats probably a long way. This sounds less like interference and more like you are in a location that is for geographic reasons, not good for receiving broadcast radio stations. When you drive beyond your county, you are probably in a better location. This can be elevation and/or position relative to hills and mountains.

Interference

This may be the case. But also another car I have with a ford stock radio has not interference at all. Boy this is like an Algebra equation. lol
