I AGREE

by jtmmnm - 8/24/08 10:07 PM In reply to: Windows Vista not respoding by Bob DeAngelo

Bob,
I agree with your analysis. Vista is the problem. I've had a new Toshiba Turion 64X2 with 3gb RAM and Vista Home Premium for the last six months, and have to force a reboot 5 or 6 times a day.

Sometimes the not responding resolves itself after a couple minutes, but other times, it completely freezes. It may sit there for hours with the circular cursor spinning away if I don't force a reboot. It will freeze under the most unlikely conditions, such as when I'm clicking through my Windows Live Mail inbox.

Of course, Toshiba and Microsoft are clueless as to the cause of the problem.

I challenge CNET and all the experienced techs in the industry to do a scientific analysis of this very common problem and find a resolution. After all, would they want a non-geek like me to accidently stumble upon the cause and find a solution?

Let's Go A Stage Further .....

Too many talented people making the same comments cant all be wrong - so why do we never see an official response from Microsoft. With many thousands of them at Redwood, surely someone could offer something.

How about it Mr. Microsoft - dont you want to improve your sales etc

I don't get it...

by Morisot - 8/27/08 6:55 AM In reply to: Let's Go A Stage Further ..... by Old Dog New Tricks

So I was curious about this thread. I have an HP 8120n with an Intel Core 2Quad @ 2.4GHz running Vista Home Premium (SP1). I do graphics and photos, play games, surf the net, watch TV through it's media center -- often doing two of them at the same time. I'm on the computer every day. I cannot remember EVER having a "not responding" with this computer (and I've had this computer about a year.)

(I know, I haven't updated to SP2 -- but the computer is working so well...)

I Obviously Didn't Explain Very Well

by Old Dog New Tricks - 8/27/08 9:58 AM In reply to: I don't get it... by Morisot

I'm with you in that I also have never had a problem (not once, ever - promise), however, there appear to be a lot of people out there who have, hence my suggestion that Microsoft respond.

Incidently, I leave my PC to update automatically, use the standard microsoft firewall, norton (never an attack), spyware terminator (never any issue), download at least 1 new piece of software each week (must have some 50+ by now) just to experiment & learn, and also do significant muli-tasking. HOWEVER, I do follow all the rules and never amend/delete anything strategic without carefully thinking it through.

So:- either

The OS is perfect and a lot of users incl many experts are making a lot of mistakes ...... or just plain unlucky ... or

Just perhaps there are some OS issues still outstanding (hence the large no of patches that we still see) ...... or

sorry, can't think of any others.

ps I can only rate my PC skills as intermediate at best, so I guess I'm also extremely lucky to have had no problems.

Thank you for your comment

SP2

by Randy Walter - 8/27/08 2:43 PM In reply to: I don't get it... by Morisot

Hey, Morisot. You are the second person the refer to SP2. I am not aware of this new release. Please elaborate as to SP2 so I can get up to speed regarding VISTA.

Vista Not responding

by Sfcjones - 4/18/09 4:49 AM In reply to: Let's Go A Stage Further ..... by Old Dog New Tricks

I would also agree it is a Vista Problem and should Microsoft ever beta test long enough to get rid of the bugs would mean thay would have the best product out there. I will never buy Vista again. If I could get the drivers for my XPS machine I would install XP in a second. Even Office 2007 has some of the same issues....not responding when you try and open a file...itthen reports that it could not find it...well, I just clicked on it.

Toning down the "not responding 'factor

by phalco - 4/17/09 10:20 PM In reply to: I AGREE by jtmmnm

I found that by maxing out my RAM helps. I also installed Advanced System Care on my computer. This program is free thru Cnet download.com.
I prefer the pro version(which is very reasonable) for it's extra features but the free version will accomplish basically the same things ,one of which is to bring excessive RAM use under control. I had an immediate gain of 15% available. It seems to have brought the 'not responding' factor to a minimum.Perhaps Mr. Microsoft hasn't addressed
this issue is because there may not be a fix for an inherent, built in glitch. Hmmm?

Disable superfetch

by Whitecougar - 8/2/08 5:56 AM In reply to: Windows Vista frequent "Not Responding" by rapheek

With 1gb of ram your best option might be to disable windows superfetch option. Superfetch caches portions your most frequently used programs into memory for faster response time. Where you have only 1gb of ram windows is forced to pull these programs out of ram in order to do requested tasks performed by you resulting in the high fragmentation. You will probably notice that the hard drive light flashes alot on your pc due to the high use of the pagefile because of this. To turn off superfetch type services in your "start search" box, scroll down the list and double click superfetch. In the window that opens change the startup type to disable, click stop under service status, click apply, click ok. After you disable the service the windows prefetch folder will have to be emptied. Type C:\ windows/prefetch in the start search box. After the access warnings and the window opens delete all the contents of the folder.

Hang on a minute

by morrie 52 - 8/2/08 7:59 AM In reply to: Disable superfetch by Whitecougar

It,s there to speed your system up not do the reverse,to my limited knowledge it's not a resource hog,UAC can be far more a problem on Vista.

just wondering

by ggeewiz - 8/4/08 8:05 AM In reply to: Hang on a minute by morrie 52

I am not a tech heavy guru either; but you mentioned you got
your machine brand new.

Did it include any cd restoration disk to restore your pc
back to factory mode or did you get it from a mom/pop shop
that just put together their own systems?

From what little i read, it sounds like the network is timing out
on waiting for something?

You mentioned seeing a process taking up alot of time.
i would take note of them and do a web search on it.

i cant remember all the names; but if it was the common vista
problem; another area to check is your network router and your
nic card. Vista has a new performace mode which tends to over
welm older routers. You can turn that feature off, but have you
tried any of the vista tests offline like its dianose and repair.

what kinds of problems do you experience offline to the router
vs. connected to the internet; you might have an id conflict
between the other machines.

hope my comments help.

regeads.

correct superfetch is intended to speed up things, but...

by Pepe7 - 8/13/08 1:13 PM In reply to: Hang on a minute by morrie 52

..that's assuming he has adequate RAM to run the OS and all the trappings. A paltry 1GB might warrant turning off the superfetch feature. YMMV.

Yes ram bit low

by morrie 52 - 8/2/08 7:54 AM In reply to: Windows Vista frequent "Not Responding" by rapheek

Really with Premium Vista you do need 2gb to run cleanly, and a dedicated graphics, try switching of glass in Vista see if that improves the situation, then switch of of your anti-badware,in a safe situation as some do not get along with each other, and can cause your problem. Also there might be an infection, try a variety of tools to check this, don't forget to run anti-root scanners for hidden files, and get better firewall ,Comodo very good.

Not Responding aggressiveness

by commorancy - 8/11/08 6:32 PM In reply to: Windows Vista frequent "Not Responding" by rapheek

The problem I have with the 'Not Responding' in Vista is not how frequent it is. At least that's not been a problem for me. The problem I have is that the system is extremely aggressive. Much more aggressive than XP. Vista seems also to make very rapid decisions about whether or not an app is functioning. In many cases, instead of allowing the user to wait to see if it comes back, Vista pops up the 'Close Program' requester almost instantly.

I'm not even sure that some of these 'Not Responding' notifications are valid. In at least one instance, Vista killed an app that was actually still doing work even as it forced closure. This new aggressive system seems to be somewhat broken in that regard.

Microsoft definitely needs to work on this aspect. Closing applications forcibly should really be done as a last resort. Vista should error on the side of caution and always pop up the 'Wait to see if the app returns' message. In most cases, Vista doesn't even offer this option.

So far, I'm not impressed by this updated very aggressive 'Not Responding' app closure system.

How Frustrating!!

by aschuttenhelm - 8/31/08 9:29 AM In reply to: Windows Vista frequent "Not Responding" by rapheek

You are not alone! I had the same thing. FINALLY found something on this site that walked me through a change to my registry file and it helped alot (only had the problem once every three or four days after the change).

Then a few days ago, when I booted up the toshiba/vista decided that it had to use a restore point. I am back to having the same problem (every three or four minutes...aaaarrrrrrghhhhhh).

I'll re-post if I can find the solution I had found previously.
