Computer Gone Haywire After McAfee/Internet Explorer Update
by ChristineVA - 8/25/08 10:48 AMI have a Windows XP operating system. I am a longtime Verizone DSL customer and, when I originally signed up, the subscription came with "free" McAfee Security Suite. After getting a new monitor, suddenly (and maybe coincidentally) my McAfee was disable and I was asked to verify subscription. Since it was through Verizon, I couldn't verify. Called Verizon and they had no clue why I was getting it for free and had no record of it. Called McAfee and they had no record I was a customer. So, I had to buy a new McAfee subscription. It has more features than my old. No big deal. In the meantime, after I installed it, I was then prompted to download 28 Microsoft Windows security updates. One of them was IE Version 7. Got all this done and was then checking all of my applications I use (I do a bit of teleworking) and one of my VERY important websites is not functioning properly.
I can access the website and do work; however, if I have to pull a document up on the screen in .pdf and work with it, it will not do it. It starts to come up, makes a blip noise, screen goes white for a split second, and it disappers. Now, I have checked every pop-up blocker that I can find and they are all off. I can get other websites .pdf's (such as my bank's or my child's school where they have a .pdf pop up), but not this site. I have this site listed as a trusted site and have it leasted as able to accept pop-ups, but no go. I have disabled my McAfee temporarily to see if that caused a block, but it didn't make a difference. Now I'm wondering if it is something in Internet Explorer 7.
I have spent ALL weekend trying to get this to work and I'm spent! Don't even know what to check anymore. Am thinking of doing a system restore.
Please does anyone have any ideas??

IE7 and McAfee. See if that gets you back to your website. Your XP updates shouldn't affect your ability to access the website. Once you've done that, install IE7 if you want. Personally, I'd use Firefox but that's your choice. Tell us where you are after that.

Thank you. I will try this when I get home (I'm at work right now). Do you think if I uninstall the McAfee, I will be able to reinstall it (it was provided online and I'm not sure what happens when I go back to retrieve it again). Sorry for being so daft but I haven't had to deal with this stuff for many years.

and re-download the McAfee and try a new install. Be aware though, McAfee (as well as Norton) have been know to interfere with application software from time to time. If you can't McAfee to work correctly, get your money back and try one of the free anti-virus programs. There are several good ones out there.

The one I really need, I was still having a problem with PDF screens. There is another site that I need to use also but have never been able to access from my home computer. I've never been able to log on that one though. It was still kaput.
I then removed the program for McAfee. I *still* cannot get the PDF screens in my application, however, I was able to logon to that website I could never get in. So, that one is fixed but the more important one is still a big problem.
It really seems like a pop-up issue or a "blocking" issue but I cannot figure out how to fix it.

Now, today, I tried a few new things. I removed the Ad-Aware program I had because I read that it could have some type of pop-up blocker in it. That didn't work.
I then removed the Yahoo toolbar that my daughter insists upon installing. There, I made some progress. While the Yahoo pop-up blocker had been off on the last few tries, TODAY I noticed that it was on and I could not get it to turn off. So I removed the toolbar. This time the PDF file within my program actually came up on the screen and lasted all of 1 second before it shut down. I then uninstalled McAfee (now that the Yahoo toolbar was gone) to see if it would make a difference. It didn't. So McAfee is back on. Now I just don't know where to go. I'm pondering checking out my Java (this application is an Oracle program that requires Java). Also wondering if there is anything in Adobe that I can work with.

things. Make sure you have cookies allowed for the website. I believe your problem to be a block of some kind at the website. I would really be interested in seeing if Firefox would solve your problem. Are you willing to give it a try?? You are doing great in your error resolution process. It's exactly what I would be doing. Unfortunately, the programming languages used today are not conducive to having many programs (utilities) running without the high risk of clashing with each other. It's a problem that's not going to go away anytime soon.

As for Firefox, I'm not opposed to it at all--just have never had a reason to try it. The application has always run fine in IE and all of my coworkers run it in IE (even version 7).
I've just talked to the programmers who run this application. They have given me access to a similar application to try at home. If I get the "blocks" in this application they are going to go over my settings with me for Adobe and Java. Apparently, I could be running to high a version, although I don't think any of that changed.

In IE7 go to Tool -> Options -> Privacy. Below the vertical slide bar click on <SITES>. This allows for adding a website separately.
Firefox is known to have better security overall. More specifically, password file is more protected than IE6/7. It's faster and the available extension/add-ons collection is extensive, including a killer PDF viewer.

Well, Things Still Aren't Going Well....

I got access to another application that uses an Oracle Forms applet this one has the same problem. So whatever the issue is, it is only associated with this type of application. These applications bring up PDFs in a "Web Cache" or a "rep_cache" whatever that means. So, tomorrow I report back to the programmers of these applications and I guess they will try to tell me what's wrong with my settings.
In the meantime, I've downloaded Firefox and THAT'S not going well. Downloaded fine and I can get to any kind of "fluff" site on the web. However, I cannot access my verizon e-mail (won't bring up my inbox) and the "site" in question--well Firefox won't even get me on it. I'm getting some transmission error message. I'm just too worn down to spend MORE hours trying to figure that out. But I was really hoping it would work.

admitting it but this has be stumped as well. Something is definitely right with your system. The only other thing I can suggest is to try this without a firewall running. Don't just disable it, exit the program so nothing is running in background. Other than that, I just don't know. Maybe someone else here, with more knowledge than I, can help you out. It was a total fluke but, on a whim, I decided to remove the 27 Windows Security Updates that I had done last week. Never thought *they* would be an issue. Removed them and my application is working beautifully. Go figure.

happier Christine. Sometimes it just takes shots in the dark to resolve issues. I would suggest this, start putting the security fixes back in one at a time testing to make sure the app still works. Keep doing so until you find the culprit, skip it and go to the next one. These security fixes do serve a good purpose. It's up to you. Good Luck!!
