MS Antivirus

by rosie82 - 8/25/08 9:32 PM

While surfing the net I have encountered a message box from MS Antivirus that says my system is infected with a virus, and to do a download. The message box gave me the option to click 'ok' or 'cancel'. I did not want to click either one so I tried to close the box by clicking the 'X'. This would not work. I had to turn off the computer (then powered it back on) the first time I had this encounter. The second encounter, it acted like it was doing a scan and found several viruses. I have Windows XP, and use Internet Explorer. Anyone else experience this problem or know what is going on here? Thanks!

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware or alternate download link

* Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
* Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
* When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
* When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
* - Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* - Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* Then click Finish.
* MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
* If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.

* On the Scanner tab:
* - Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
* - Then click on the Scan button.
* The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
* The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
* When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
* Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
* Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
* The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

* -- Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

**If you encounter this message:"c:\program files\malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll Unable to register the dll/ocx: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x5" Click on ignore mbamext.dll

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users

* Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
* An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
* If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
* Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
* Click the Scanning Control tab.
* Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):

Close browsers before scanning.
Scan for tracking cookies.
Terminate memory threats before quarantining.

* Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
* Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
* On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
* On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
* Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
* After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
* Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
* A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
* If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".

MS Antivirus

Thank you for the suggestions. I downloaded both programs, and followed the instructions you gave. Neither program found any problems, so I assume the MS Antivirus did not get into my system, and perhaps it is at certain websites looking for victims to take the bait. At the times I came across MS Antivirus I was checking on the history and prices of antiques. Seems no site is safe, and you have to always be on the guard.

why don't you download HJT, run a scan and post the log on ONE of the mentioned HJT forums.

Here is the download link and HJT forums:

I Think It's A IE Malware Problem

by BobHelms - 8/25/08 11:07 PM In reply to: MS Antivirus by rosie82

Hi Rosie82:
I have a very similar problem. My 'pop up' tells me my computer is running slow and I need to download "Vista Spyware" to correct the problem. It also causes CTFMON.exe to crap out, and now when I start IE it has no tool bars. I then have to relaunch IE to see the tool bars. My AV software (Bit Defender) discovered (Trojan.Fakeav.AD) it but did not remove it. They (Bit Defender) are currently working on a fix. I just joined this forum to see if I could get some more help dealing with this MalWare. Good luck on fixing yours.

MS Antivirus

I just helped someone who had this problem. I just had her go to START > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore and restore the system to the day before the problem was noticed. After that, I had her update her anti-virus and anti-spyware programs and perform complete (not quick) scans. It worked. Hope this helps.

Not gone...

by c4dev - 8/26/08 8:45 PM In reply to: MS Antivirus by rosie82

Hey there Rosie...

I hate to tell you, but the virus is not gone. If you got that pop-up and the Anti-Virus program found nothing, you can assume you are still infected. I suggest that before you go installing programs and allowing antivirus programs to randomly remove files from your computer that you try using one that has proven success. Maybe even one that comes from the same developer as your operating system. If you use Windows, I highly recommend Windows Live OneCare as I have successfully removed 17 out of 17 viruses in the last 2 weeks using the application. Viruses that AVG and Kaspersky could not find, and the ones they did find, could not remove from the registry and startup.

The ball is in your hands to install and try whichever application you feel will work, but keep in mind that a large percentage of the spyware, malware and antivirus softwares out there are bogus, and just install more crap onto the computer than was even originally there.

The harsh reality is that, your computer will only do as you tell it to, and viruses are 90% of the time installed by users that just click yes to every prompt that is presented onto the screen (not saying this is how you got yours).

Good luck with your virus and remember that internet security starts with User Awareness, there are many of free reports on the internet that post the most recent and up to date threats in the cyber world, in fact, CNET has one of its own that is more than informative.

Cheers!
