Buzz Out Loud Lounge: Really, can you just not have Brian Tong on the podcast?

I think the word is "journalism"

by minimalist - 8/24/08 10:26 AM In reply to: Actually... by Magishine

and as much as I love Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert they are not journalists. They are satirists (and really freakin' good ones at that). But they are still taking sides in their satire. While their shows work as a critique of current events (like the political cartoon) it would be unwise to rely solely on their shows for all your news.

Classical journalism is impartial and kind of boring but nonetheless important work. Its so easy to editorialize and to spin (sadly that is what most network and cable news has devolved into). It's much harder to keep your ego and your opinions under wraps and try to get at the truth, even if you might personally find it offensive.

That all said, BOL isn't my sole source of tech news and I don't expect it to be. I love the back and forth that goes on between the hosts and I really miss it when one of them is absent. I would never want it to be a serious news show.

Pints and gallons

by luc-mobile - 8/24/08 11:38 AM In reply to: Actually... by Magishine

These latest replies sound like I was trying to advocate a show devoid of opinion. I certainly was not. Note that my comment includes "extremely intelligent analysis by Tom and Molly". I also said a little humor was welcome. It's all about the excess. Anything can go awry when there is too much of it. Even humor. Even sex or pizza.

By the way, this was a good week to listen to BOL. Looking forward to the next one.

I don't mind at all.

by fbbbb - 8/23/08 10:33 AM In reply to: Really, can you just not have Brian Tong on the podcast? by mc4_a

... although I think I might object to more sub-Usher antics. However as I alluded to before, I would really like to see (or rather hear) Ackerman, Tong and Wood. That would be a trio for the ages.

I like Brian Tong on BOL. I guess you don't like Crave either then.

Agree 100%

I enjoy the Buzz Out Loud podcast. However, whenever I read that Brian Tong is co-hosting, I just can't listen. He sounds like he's trying too hard to be cool. Like he's auditioning to be a gangsta rapper or perform in a rap video. Brian, speak English, not ebonics, please. There's nothing wrong with sounding intelligent. Molly, Tom, and Jason do that very well.

Eubonics and IQ

by Renegade Knight - 8/28/08 2:15 PM In reply to: Agree 100% by smooth_operator2006

Yeah, you were probably joking, He doesn' speak eubonics. He is sharp as a tack. You have to know how to recognized intellgence when you see it. Some folks don't have the knack.

Take a close look at what you wrote for grammar, spelling and typos. The irony is a bit humorous, unless it was intentional on your part.

But the problem with that is...

by Slikkster - 8/30/08 5:13 AM In reply to: 50 posts on the tong? by bobbie2836

potentially half the people don't like him and the other half love him. Now, obviously, that proportion might not be accurate. But do you honestly think that Jamoto would get these kinds of "I hate/love him/her" comments? Probably not. I'd venture to say that overwhelmingly the votes would be on the "love" side.

So, you take a chance of alienating a portion of your audience when you put someone like that on the 'cast. I saw that with Jason Calacanis on TWIT. There was and continues to be a lot of blowback about him. And it sounds like there's no love lost between he and Dvorak, either. But at least THAT --the contentiousness between he and Dvorak-- makes for interesting theater at times. BT doesn't bring that to the show. He only irks some listeners, not the show hosts. So, there's no drama there. It's a sillyfest at times.

Obviously, the hosts like BT. And, obviously, there's a significant number of people who've chimed in here that like him, too. So the question remains: do you look for someone interesting but less divisive, or do you just go with the mentality that says "hey, obviously this person generates interest, so let's put him on!"?

Your call, BOL. It's your show. Just know that I won't listen on those days, and, as seen here in the thread, others won't, either. And others? They'll love it.

Agree not so much

by RobertK2of3 - 8/31/08 10:45 AM In reply to: Agree 100% by smooth_operator2006

I like when he's on. He sounds really hip, which is usually a warning flag of potential idiocy, but the things he says are intelligent.

He kinda gives me hope for the future. People who speak like that aren't wannabe idiots--they may just talk like that.

Brian is a cool guy

by demonjrules - 9/5/08 4:35 PM In reply to: Really, can you just not have Brian Tong on the podcast? by mc4_a

Just that I don't Listen to Buzz Out Loud specifically just to get a few laughs, I go for the occasional laugh now and then, Tom's embarrassingly lame puns and the occasional Molly rant. I know from being a subscriber to Brian Tongs Blog that he is watching all of the posts and is taking the feedback and suggestions into consideration. Brian, you are a wonderful guest host on the show, but just try to stick to the news, Alright? No hard feelings bro.

No no no!

See now, look at what you did!!

He's been on the podcast twice lately and he's been kinda low-key--and not nearly as much fun! You've de-Tong'd him!
