redver7: SP2???? This is news to me. Have I been missing something here?
I did just check at MS and there is NO SP2 for either Vista or Office 2007 (of which I thought he may have been thinking) so don't worry about downloading the mythic program.
I installed it when it first showed up and had several problems, the insurmountable one being that it disabled the digital audio output to my AV receiver (I have an HTPC setup). I tried for days to solve the problem, finally learning this was a known bug with no solution. So I had no choice but to uninstall the SP1, and have since had to block it several times from installing itself automatically.
I have wondered if this problem has been resolved with subsequent updates. I should do some more investigating to find out, but until then am happy to wait. Things are working fine now.
I should add that my PC is not quite a year old, came with Vista pre-installed and I've not added anything at all to it's innards.
When SP1 was first released, Windows Updates tried downloading and installing it. That never worked for me at all. So after, ten or so attempts, I tried downloading the standalone download and installing it from that but I continued to get the same error I got on the Windows Update SP1 installation (unfortunately I cannot remember the error number).
I decided to contact Microsoft Support, but anything they suggested was of no help or use to me. I think they ran out of ideas after fifteen or so emails.
So I'm now left with a very nice computer with Windows Vista that I got over a year ago (Easter of 2007) and with no SP1. However I have only had a couple of updates for my computer since I gave up trying to install it (June?).
I avoided SP1 untill yesterday, I was busy and took my eye off the ball, saw 'updates ready to install' thought coffee break and clicked yes, then the dreaded words Service pack 1 registered... to late. I went cold. The nightmare of SP1 for XP came back, 24 hours without sleep trying to rescue my brand new XP from its clutches, fortunately my techy daughter was home and after a running email battle with HP and Microsoft it got fixed, no it wouldn't happen again, would it.
Of course it did, everything was in miniature, and it kept freezing, savour daughter is in India so I'm on my own, thank goodness for restore but I am left with a limping machine and a list of errors that refuse to fix, vista is now nearly as slow as my 5 year old XP, MS must know the gremlins by now and as vista is supposed to be the last of the wndows what are they trying to force us to upgrade to now?? My computer a year old is it obsolete already, why didn't I buy a Mac and why didn't I make my Amiga 1200 (still going strong) internet ready when I had the chance. Come on Microsoft, if you took your car in for service and they made it undrivable you could sue and win. We have paid good money to be owners of our computer not slaves to Microsoft.
Rant over! Now back to trying to reclaim my property.
You said that you saw "Windows Update" and thought to yourself, coffee break and then went ahead and hit ok to the download, only to find out that the SP1 was part of the download you had just okay'd. If your having problems because of it, think back... when you hit ok, did you have any open windows at the time? What was the state of condition your pc was in at the time of the download? If you had any windows open when you okay'd the update, that would more than likely screw up your download. If I were you, I would do a system restore to a prior date of you okaying the download. If you need your daughter's help on pc items, you can wait till she can do a system restore for you, or you can post back to this message (hit the reply button) and I can tell you how to do a system restore. It is a very simple procedure and one that I have done many many times in the past 8 years.
Definetly download it and apply SP1 for Vista. SP1 speeds up Vista by some astronomical amount, something like 30-40% faster than RTM Vista. Many of the annoyances have been fixed with SP1 as well.
I used to bash Vista. I just didnt like it for whatever reason. But now that its faster I've been using it for my development work and I love it! One big annoyance for me was the incessant "user account control" notification. If you turn that one annoyance off, you will probably enjoy using Vista a lot more.
I hate to tell you this but Vista Home Premium blows. My Sony laptop came with that as well as some of the most poorly written programs Sony could have ever installed on any machine. The result was a machine that was basicly unusable for anyone other than a total retard.
If your laptop is fairly fast my best advice for you is to go out and buy Vista Ultimate, save your data, wipe your hard-drive on reinstallation and enjoy Vista the way it was meant to be used. The OEM versions that come with machines are massively slower than retail Vista. Those OEM versions of Vista Home Premium that come pre-installed on computers did more to damage Vista's marketing than anything I have ever seen. They simply create a very lame user experience.
Pre-SP1 advice:
You dont need to do anything! But I can suggest a few things:
1. download CCleaner and clean up your hard drive
2. download SpyBot Search and Destroy and clean up your hd
You can find both of those on download.com - they are entirely free.
Thank you Dana for your post. I have read your replys to many other questions in this forum and I do believe that you are extremely knowledgeable in these areas. I have copied and pasted yours and bits and pieces of other posts, and have printed them up. I am now going to do one more virus/spyware scan and then go for the download. I did update HP, made a back up DVD, created a system restore, and saved the SP1 download to my desktop. This will be my last post for the next several hours as it will take 2+ hours to scan my pc and then do the download.
Oh, by the way, thanks for reminding me to temporarily disabling my virus protection while I do the download. I now remember that this was suggested on the Microsoft web page, but forgot about it until your post reminded me. Thank heavens for the copy and paste function, if it wasn't for that function, I'd have page upon page of hand written notes from all of these posts on what to do before the actual download! Thank you again... please continue to respond to others questions in this forum... your information is the one I consider the most valuable. There are several others who are extremely intelligent in these areas, but you rank #1 for me.
Bad idea Mary BUT it is your computer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Depending on ones experience with Vista, there may be incentives to upgrade to SP1 and disincentives not to. But one thing is definitely true: A service pack has never, and will never, make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
I ran into a problem w/ service pack 1 Vista download....couldn't shut down after download....through Microsoft I was advised to download Vista sp 1 by removing anti-virus prior to download process...successful after that.
YES, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KEEP YOUR COMPUTER UPDATED WHEN RUNNING ANY VERSION OF WINDOWS. I own a computer repair shop in my town I have installed it on all the computers that come in with vista. No problems that I could notice. Just make sure all your drivers are up to date and BACK UP ALL THE IMPORTANT INFORMATION JUST IN CASE. Vista has came along ways since it was first released. Started out to be a nightmare for most users mainly DRIVER issue's with older printers and other device's ans software. Hope this was helpful
Pre-SP1, I was having a recurring problem where I would lose internet access after a few days, and a repair network connection would not restore it. Only a reboot would fix the problem, until it recurred a few days hence.
I installed Vista SP1 with no additional hassles, and this particular problem has not recurred since the SP1 installation.
Note that I am aware that some folks have had problems with an endless reboot cycle upon installation. If this should happen to you, please call Microsoft at http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=11732
My wife's Dell Laptop had Vista in it (March 2007). After two separate incidents of having the computer TOTALLY lock up, the first recoverable, the second not, I had my talk with Dell tech support (Sanjay), somewhere "overseas." Their solution was to do a "factory restore," and my response was that there was no F@&*ing way Vista was ever going back in the PC, that it was an immature operating system, and that I would not waste any more of my time on it. Dell sent me XP Pro, I installed that, and we have never looked back. I just purchased my own laptop this June (Sager NP9262), and specified XP Pro. We will keep our household "a Vista-Free zone" as long as we can. My guess is that Vista was M$'s repeat of Windows ME - makes you so pissed off that you will buy their next operating system no matter what it is. Chances are that by the time I require an operating system other than XP Pro to run the latest software being produced, Vista will be obsolete anyway.
