Mary, That Explains

by papakeithjenkins - 8/22/08 10:37 PM In reply to: THIS IS MARY AGAIN, THE ONE WHOSE QUESTION IS POSTED by mkrock

If I had gone from ME on a seven year old box to Vista instead of from XP on a 2 GHz machine to Vista on the same machine, I would doubtless have a better opinion of the New OS. After all, ME was so terribly limited compared to XP and the box itself was much slower. But, and this is a huge BUT, if you had the same computer that you are currently using running XP then you would notice the amazing difference in the Operating Systems of ME and XP, but you would still have the full ******* and power and speed of the computer that Vista has so dilitariously robbed from your ever having known.

:-(

If I understand your post correctly, you are saying that if I had experienced XP, that I would realize that Vista robbed me of speed?

I can't stop laughing. This Vista that I am sitting at right now is blazing fast (the Broadband helps I'm sure). It takes 2 seconds for my home page to be fully pulled up, takes 1 to 2 seconds to go to any web page, email, loading videos. I can open emails with hugely gigantic attachments in a second or two....

Now are you telling me that XP is faster than that?

Yes! Faster

by papakeithjenkins - 8/23/08 10:46 PM In reply to: IN REPLY TO: MARY THAT EXPLAINS IT by mkrock

I recently had a hard drive failure that caused me to completely reinstall my XP Pro completely, and in having it completely loaded - several burning progs - three rippers - two video editors - two audio editors - two graphic editors - MS Office 2007 Enterprise - WinRar - WinZip - PowerISO and Magic ISO - Power DVD - Adobe Acrobat - much much more - I have yet to see any customers computer running Vista (even with a 50% hardware advantage over my machine) that runs nearly as fast or smooth, and I actually do have hundreds of customers.

In San Antonio you can pickup an "off lease" Dell P4 @ 2.8 with 512 MB RAM and an 80 GB Hard Drive for about $100, load it with XP Pro and all other needed software (and as mentioned above - I use a lot) and you would be astounded to see the way it outshines just about any Vista machine on which I have ever worked. << Honest!!! >> And your computer is over twice that much machine in the hardware but running an operating system that is LITERALLY three to five times as big and cumbersome.

Thanks for listening - either way.

PROGRESSION TO VISTA

by Randy Walter - 8/22/08 11:07 PM In reply to: THIS IS MARY AGAIN, THE ONE WHOSE QUESTION IS POSTED by mkrock

Hi, Mary. I pretty much agree with you. At the University of Houston where I worked for over 30 years the university bought new Dell computers every time Microsoft released a new OS and Dell installed that OS. I retired while using the XP-PROFESSIONAL. Now at home I have a Dell 531 with an AMD 64 processor and 2G of RAM (don't try to use less than 2G for VISTA). I installed SP1 last March when it was released. I personally don't see what everyone is beefing about performance wise. However, occasionally when I want to delete or run or change something the OS will open a couple of boxes trying to verify my intentions. It can be a little clunky. Of course, you know the old adage, "measure twice, cut once". It's better to be safe than sorry when you can't recover your work. My advice is to stick with updates/upgrades provided MS, I am.

Wait a While

by TommyBaby - 8/22/08 10:31 PM In reply to: Should I download Windows Vista SP1 patch? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

It took me 6 tries at updating to SP1 to finally get it to install. The only way that I did get it to finally install was to call Microsoft Tech Support and follow some crazy and archaic steps. I had to uninstall my (McAfee) Anti-Virus. And Spybot. Then I had to re-boot. Then I had to run "MSConfig" and turn off all third party services and hide all Microsoft services. I've had this computer since June '07, so I'm not exactly new to Vista. The Tech rep couldn't even access parts of my Toshiba laptop, even though I downloaded a helper program and granted him full access to my computer. I still haven't gotten it to work right. A word of warning.

Mary - Don't hear the bad staff anymore

by GEO2003 - 8/22/08 10:45 PM In reply to: Wait a While by TommyBaby

JUST BACK UP YOUR FILES, and go for it.
There is alwasy going to be a whole bunch of people who will insist that an older operating system is better then a new one.
Will be here again discussing this issues 2 years from now when 7 is release to the public.
Read my very first post, make your restore disk with the HP utility or call HP to help you make your restore disks.
Once you have them, and your data safe.
You will see how much more responsive Vista SP1 is.
My pc is 3 years old.
2 GZ CPU SINGLE CORE
2 GBYTES OF MEM
256 MBYTES OF VIDEO RAM
100 MBYTE HARD DRIVE RUNNING AT 7200 RPM

AND IT RUNS GREAT WITH SP1.

IN REPLY TO: WAIT AWHILE

I had McAfee for 7 years and every problem my pc encountered was due to McAfee. I also had Spybot Search and Destroy, which I loved, but I realized that it would sometimes become to aggressive and cause problems, so I got rid of it. I have had TrendMicro for the past year and have had no problems what so ever with it.

Regarding you letting a technician take over your pc for you, I have been there and done that also. I just wanted to make you aware of one thing. When I allowed a technician to take over my pc, they did a good job of finding the problem and correcting it, BUT... they left a bunch of stuff on my pc that they used to be able to take over my pc, and that stuff caused my pc to have issues different from what the original problem had been. When I contacted them back, they took over my pc again and deleted a bunch of stuff and then my pc ran great. You might want to check back with the technicians and ask them if items they put on your pc to enable them to take over your pc were correctly removed when they finished the job. One example is that they left numerous Active X's on my pc, and all sorts of files.

Another example of bad information.

by GEO2003 - 8/22/08 11:01 PM In reply to: IN REPLY TO: WAIT AWHILE by mkrock

If a technician is to try and help Mary, nothing needs to be installed in her computer to take over her pc. Vista already has the necessary program built in for that to happen, if anything the technician should check that there is no conflicting or dated drivers and then download SP1.
This is if someone was to help her remotly. For what I read from her all she is asking is if she should download SP1 and / or can she revert if something goes wrong.
1-Yes there are all the positive benefits posted here in upgrading to SP1.
2-Yes she can restore her pc, to pre- SP1 if something goes wrong.
3-Yes some people run into problems but mostly is their fault for not maintaining their pc. Do you know how many time other programs have crash my pc to the point where I have not been able to restore but instead installed the operating system again. Not the OS FAULT.
4-Yes she should back up all her data and create her restore disk.
5-No she has no choice on other not yet matured OS'S because she already spent her money on a pc with THE GREAT VISTA OPERATING SYSTEM.

Enough of the arguments against Vista already.
Help in answering her questions, not giving her advise about changing her operating system.

If you don't like Vista fine, that is not what she was asking in the first place.

ENOUGH, ENOUGH,

Mary here: Thank you for your post. You are right on. Too many complainers about Vista. Now if we could just get everyone to read the actual posts, reply in kind to the post, then maybe we wouldn't have to waste so much time getting the information we are requesting.

Again I thank you for your post. I'm all prepped and ready to do the download. HP is updated, pc has been scanned for all the bad stuff, a system restore has been done, as has a backup, and the SP1 has been saved to my desktop to be downloaded from very shortly.

Again, thank you for your post.

MARY - When you are ready

by GEO2003 - 8/23/08 12:24 AM In reply to: IN REPLY TO: ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF BAD INFORMATION by mkrock

Don't forget to turn off the screen saver, and don't forget to change the time your pc goes to stanby or sleep.
If the pc starts the screen saver or goes to sleep the update could be interrupted and corrupted by the screen saver, or fail if the pc goes to sleep.
If you don't know the steps to change this post back.
Hell,
Right click on the desktop, select PERSONALIZE, Select Screen Saver, on the box that opens, select NONE.

To turn off the sleep time, click on START, click on Control Panel on the black area to your right of the menu.
Look for something similar to Change Battery Settings, on a desktop is different then a laptop, I have a laptop, so it may be a little different.
When you find it click on it and Select the Power Saving Plan you are using. Select Change Settings.

Under Put the computer to sleep on : Set it to NEVER.
Under Turn off the display : Set it to Never also.
You will revert this later. Click on Save settings on the bottom right hand corner of the window close all open windows and remember where you found your Power Settings.

One Question, your DVD backup includes all your documents, pictures, music on so on correct.
If not don't proceed until you finish making sure you have made a back up of everything.
I am not trying to scare you, just trying to make sure you remember everything you need or have created since you bought the pc is on your DVD.
Don't rush.
We are here to help.
Geo

Mary - When you are ready

Thank you again Geo2003. Your the first one to mention turning off the screen saver and the time the pc goes into standby. Good ideas! I have been in the position of downloading something and my pc has gone into standby or sleep and then I have to move the mouse around to see how far the download has gotten. I know I do not want to do that with this SP1 download as I now do remember reading that once the download starts, that one should not touch the pc including the mouse! Thanks for reminding me about that, I would have forgotten it.

Download it

by nb2000nb - 8/22/08 11:09 PM In reply to: Should I download Windows Vista SP1 patch? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

You should download it. It contains all previous updates, hotfixes, and security fixes. I have been upgrading my version of Vista since the beta releases and have had no problems with any of them. My Vista is rock solid, especially with SP1. Many features are improved upon, including performance. (I do a lot of work on my PC. Everything from gaming, multimedia, productivity/school work, and software development)

TO MARY:

by Art Mori - 8/22/08 11:24 PM In reply to: Should I download Windows Vista SP1 patch? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had a brand new HP Pavilion in Mar 2008 and downloaded the SP1 patch after getting it set up. My computer went down shortly thereafter and had to send it back to HP (with great difficulty I might add!) I only recently (this is August already!) got my computer back and running!

My Advice: Forget it! Microsoft seems to be only about profits and no longer interested in creating a good program for its customers. Vista should never have been released when it did and indicates to me that it put profits ahead of quality. Instead of being smart, it has obligated its users to do the work that they should have done in the first place!!! Microsoft looks like a company on its way out.
