My HDTV is quite a bit older and does not have HDMI ports or an ATSC tuner. It can only display 480p and 1080i HD signals, and only through the Component (Y,Pb, Pr) jacks on the TV. I was wondering if there was a converter box for ATSC signals capable of outputting thru Component ports in 480p or preferably 1080i. I am willing to pay a little more for it, i have a coupon. Thanks!
You have a digital tv. If you can't get OTA digital channels, then there are a few digital tuner available in the market place that you can buy. But if you want a converter box, I Apex (at circuit city) and Channel Master (at Fry's) make such a box.
They cost $60, so you will have to pay the extra 20.
it doesn't have a digital tuner and i want to take advantage of the fact that it is still an HDTV. But thanks for the info ![]()
it will receive OTA digital signals. For $20, why not go out and get one and see.
There are several converter boxes on the market with HDMI connections, but you can not use your government coupons. There is a list of these boxes towards the middle of this page: http://www.ezdigitaltv.com/Converter_Box_Retailers.html
He stated he does not have HDMI, so even if he spends more money it serves him no purpose. And if the converter boxes only have s-video or coax that doesn't help either.
I wonder if a Cable or satelite box would work without a subscription. I'm not talking about picking up their programming, but just acting as a tuner and you passing the signal through it.
It would have to be a HD receiver still in order to do it because non HD only have s-video or coax. Are you able to swap out or install a HDMI card? I have a monitor as well using only component but if I were wanting to, I have exra slots I could install or change out input cards. HDMI for mine run about $125.
my TV is an old RCA 52' HDTV/monitor. It actually has VGA ports on the back for "a high definition cable box" It really isn't add-on compatible so HDMI cards are out of the question...the only ports capable of 1080i are the Component and the VGA ports. Since i've done more research, i suppose there is no converter box thats eligible for a coupon for my needs. But as you said above, maybe a cable box that can recieve a digital signal would work...any ideas on where i could find one? I really don't want to get one from my cable company because it costs 7 bucks a month extra to "rent" the box, which i think is really not worth it considering all the extra digital cable channels on my standard cable service come in on my other tv with a built in ATSC tuner. So i would just rather buy a box then have to rent one...
Would be a good start. But again I don't know if the signal will just pass through it or not enabling you to just use the tuner portion of it.
I use an old VCR as a tuner and then let my AVR(Denon)do the upconverting for me. So I haven't even tried what i'm suggesting to you. But then i'm one that doesn't bother fixing/upgrading what works unless necessary.
that link does not have any boxes with hdmi connection Ive a monitor without a tv tunner but has hdmi and would like to find a converter box with hdmi too.
the DTVpal DVR offers 1080i output throu component cables, its more than most converter boxes, $250 at www.dtvpal.com, but as the name implies it also has a DVR device.
There are notes on the bottom of the wikipedia page I linked below regarding models with the desired component video connections. I plunked the Samsung into froogle.com and it came back with a somewhat less than horrible price of $159 + shipping from B&H online. Considering the OP doesn't want to buy a new HDTV, it's worth it IMHO. Here are the links-

To the OP> Just do the due diligence on the features of the respective boxes which provide component output but may limit you in other areas that aren't evident by reading the specifications. Also, visit the technical support sites of the manufacturers for starters, and more tecnically focuses sites like avsforum.com for the slicing and dicing .

I have a older model rca 52" hd tv monitor. It doesn't have a digital tuner. I bought the newest sony dvd recorder off of ebay. It has digital and analog tuners. I also have a 7.1 surround sony digital reciever. I have the reciever hooked up with rca sound cables and digital optical cables. Right now I can record on component and watch tv in analog. Do I need to get another dvd recorder just to watch tv. When it changes to digital. My problem also is when I watch analog tv I have to listen to the sound in analog stereo because digital audio comes out before analog and doesnt match the video. basically is there a analog to digital sound adapter.
