Two questions

by proace360 - 8/17/08 2:26 PM

I am looking to get a new laptop, and I would like to know two things.

The first is, how much would my current laptop sell for on ebay or another site?

It's an HP Pavilion dv5000

The Specs are:
Windows XP SP2 Media Center Ed.
Intel Centrino Duo T2050
1GB RAM
80GB HDD
Nvidia GeForce Go 7400
DVD drive (writer)
15.4" screen

It has a light dent in the front speaker (doesn't effect sound quality)

My second question pertains to minimum specs for a new laptop. I am a casual gamer, so I would like a decent graphics card. I would like to be able to play games like Half-Life 2 (not high requirements), Spore, and other games (but not demanding games like Crysis). What type of graphics card, how much ram, and how big of a harddrive would be able to run these types of applications at minimum to regular requirement levels?

If it's Vista...

I'd recommend nothing less than 2 gigs, preferably 3 or more if possible. I have one gig, and am using the classic interface, and I still have problems with "lagginess".

the new gateway 6864fx on Best Buys website. For the money it's pretty good. You could spend more and get less. They also have a couple of good 17" machines.

so a radeon mobility 2600 is good enough to run games like the ones listed? Would a 3200 or 3450 (i think those are the ones) be even better?

hd 2600 is an 512 ddr3 graphics card, the hd 3200 is an 256mb and I believe the 3450 is 512mb. So ether the 2600 or 3450 would probably be fine. This thing also has a 7200 rpm hard drive and yes, it has an 64 bit os so it will recognize all of the 4 gb ram.

HD 3450

I had this video card and it did well with games like UT3 or BF2 but could not play the more graphics intense games like Crysis or Call of Duty 4. I upgraded mine to a 4850 but because I like to crank my settings up.

I woudl recomend using vista 64 bit and getting 4 gigs..

though game compatability would be the issue.. but as i understand it, you might have the rights to use both 32 and 64 bit on the same computer w/o additional license (additional info/confirmation is needed to verify this)
