Speed It Up Now

by Robert L Masters - 8/13/08 11:12 AM In reply to: Recommendation to Speed it Up Computers by frescar_11

I went to this site and downloaded the "FREEWARE". It seems to work fairly well, but as soon as I tell the "FREE" program to "fix" my problems the program takes me to a site that wants $19.95. I do not mind paying for programs and service and if this site said at the beginning it would be $19.95 to use it, I could have made an informed consent to download or not. However, after I downloaded the "FREE" program it wants money, then no, so I deleted it and the website from my computer. If you are actually using a "FREE" site that actually works "FREE" I would appreciate a link to that site. Thank you, Bob

Re Speed it Up Now

by frescar_11 - 8/14/08 12:57 AM In reply to: Speed It Up Now by Robert L Masters

It is grateful helping other solving problem regarding computer speed as what Gail needed too.
Just go to CNET.Com search for "PC Speed Drive" it is free ware. By running speeditup exe it is simultaneously installed the PC checkup where it is non-freeware but then you may use it easily forever functional as non registered version. You may also use the registered one but i encourage you to try on first the non reg "PC Checkup". To be sure of non blue screen use "Free Ram Optimizer" it is a freeware also... There you are you may enjoy the appropriate computer speed looks like brand new one.

It Ain't Free

by roadbase - 8/16/08 8:03 AM In reply to: Speed It Up Now by Robert L Masters

I agree, if they want money, they should tell you up front. cnet should not offer "free" stuff that won't work unless you pay.

Motherboards

by cnetmessageman - 8/27/08 10:33 AM In reply to: IS THEIR ANY RECOMMENDATION FOR MOTHER BOARD USE.. by frescar_11

For current motherboards checkout Gigabyte and Asus. Both not only offer excellent speed and reliability but also provide excellent documentation and Driver support. My personal preference is Gigabyte particularly if you are using AMD processors.

The only EASY way I know....

by AnnaSummers - 8/14/08 2:54 PM In reply to: In plain English, how do I speed up a slow computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The only EASY way I know is to get some imaging software, such as Acronis True Image and WHILE YOUR PC IS FAST (preferably right after installing the OS) run True Image on your C-drive to create an image of that hard drive partition that you can restore when you think your PC is becoming bogged down. If you can get some help with re-installing your OS (or if your PC came with a system disk (or partition) that will restore it to its original purchased state), THEN you can use AcronisTrueImage to try and keep it that way.

If you keep a "diary" in word or wordpad of anything you install or do to change your PC between images, then you can restore an earlier image (even every month) and follow that diary list to bring it back up to current and then make a new updated image (note this in your diary - the name/date of the image - and continue the list). This technique is pretty much foolproof, but you do need a second large hard drive in your PC for backups.

A couple of things: (1) You should use "Move To" to move your "My Documents" folder from your C-partition to a different partition, so it won't get clobbered when you restore an earlier image. This folder should be backed up separately from the image of your C-partition.

(2) Put your pagefile on a separate partition by itself.

(3) Move your OE Email store to the partition with the My Documents folder....You know what - I think you are going to need hands on help with this. It's not hard if you have some basic understanding of your PC, but if you don't, then it isn't easy and would take 3 pages to fully explain it.

It's hard to "undo" months or years of clutter on a PC, but it's EASY to maintain a clean PC if you have a plan/system. The primary basic thing you need is the ability to step back in time with your PC - and AcronisTrueImage gives you that. It is the ONE thing I would never be without. Second Copy is great for backing up your own data and cherry-picking a few application configuration files from C. Express Assist is "the bomb" for backing up your email, signatures, rules, etc. in a snap (and you don't have to restore it to read it).

What makes this all much more difficult is having an "off-the-shelf" PC. If you don't install your own OS, which gives you the opportunity to define your own partitions, then you are stuck with whatever the vendors decide THEY want you to have, including all the crapware they put on it - they actually re-SELL the hard drive space (that they already sold to YOU) to vendors for "trialware" and adware and spyware and whatever they can get money for, for putting it on your PC. They are selling the same hard drive space twice, only you are paying for space YOU don't get (the vendors get theirs).

Of course, with Vista and progeny and Windows LIVE anything, and even SP3 to some extent - you won't be owning your own PC anyway - you will just pay for it, Microsoft and other vendors will control it and everything on it. I don't see any way to stop them because all the people a slice short of a sandwich have their heads stuck in the sand and are buying VISTA.

The only EASY way I know ...

by FHankfreeman - 8/27/08 2:35 PM In reply to: The only EASY way I know.... by AnnaSummers

Ms. Anna Summers, you have put down an excellent post.

Some of the software solutions are quite interesting and I have heard of same and some are worthy of further investigation since you have spoken to confidently about them... Thanks.

Another solution you might want to check out is FASTCOPY... Some gentlemen in Japan has written a application that is quite good at move large amount of data from HD to HD...(not partition 0 to 1)..

As an example, I have taken Sql Server database and log file system that are 20 gigs and above running on a Raid 1 HD environment and copied the 20 gigs in 40 minutes. FASTCOPY would do it in 10 mins.. I was blown away. We quickly validated these numbers and then put the application into production where I use to work.

Soooo, when I had to back up my 120 gig HD for a Vista Reload you be absolutely assured I used FASTCOPY both before and after...

Check it out for yourself.

As for your last paragraph, I fully agree with your comment to a point. I did not fully understand all of what you said in the last sentence, could you possiblty rephrase it for me, either on this board or by email..

A thank you note from Gail to all our members

by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator - 8/15/08 11:16 AM In reply to: In plain English, how do I speed up a slow computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to post an email I received from Gail to thank you all for you contribution to her question:

"I want to thank everyone who responded. I was especially thankful for the clarity of the responses. I am still reading the responses, yes I did open up a can off worms, but I believe my question is helping a multitude of readers. It was comforting to know I am doing all I can, the next step is an upgrade to memory or a new harddrive.
I encourage all who responded to remember in future responses to questions that, clarity is only a few keystrokes away from solving someone's frustration.

Thanks again and keep up the good work"

Gail D.

I thank you too

I have to agree with Gail that your responses helped more people than her. I now have two computers that are behaving like they just came out of the box instead of running so slow that I wanted to toss them out. I downloaded CCleaner and AVG Free 8.0 and all my problems seem to have disappeared.

Thanks everyone.

I concur.

I too, passively reading, was greatly gifted by many of the responses. Now I wonder if i really had to buy two new computers, one for my children and one for me.
Thanks.

Slow PC issue from Gail.

by FHankfreeman - 8/16/08 12:57 PM In reply to: A thank you note from Gail to all our members by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Gail, just like all who contributed to your question, I read the response with great interest... I am an OLD War Horse on these type of issues and simply put, you have a real problem that can not be taken lightly. Most of all you did not give us enough info about your system... SOOO I am about to Scold you here, for I want to see that you have done the right thing with your time and money.

I see that you are getting more ram and more hard drive, but here again you did not specify the size of the Hard drive nor the rotational speed. As an example most Notebooks ome with 5400 rpm hd or slower. I upgraded my HP notebook to a 7200 rpm and wonderful things happend. Hopefully who ever sold you a new HD sold you a Large HD @ 7200 rpm.

Additionally, others memtioned solid ideas and cute tool, but not one of them answered your question directly and gave you a plan to follow, which would be a critical component of backing up all you needed and being able to restore what you need. As an example if you use outlook as your mail program, regardless of mail server, you would hae to back up the .pst file.

I think you have my point(s) here you needed to provide more info. and you needed a plan, if you have proceeded without a plan I wish you the best. If you need one then contact those who have provided you their email address and make a plan ... Then work your plan... No side adventures or you will be dissappointed wit the results.

Dell XP performance

by x595 - 8/16/08 6:03 PM In reply to: In plain English, how do I speed up a slow computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I'm fighting the same battle, 1)AVG free antivirus 8.0 removed hundreds more tracking cookies than AdAware; 2)Auslogics free disk defragmenter made a significant improvement in speed-once computer is online (still very slow startups)
Hope it helps!

In only a couple of words . . . Auslogics Boost speed 4.1

by Maiyan820 - 8/20/08 12:17 PM In reply to: In plain English, how do I speed up a slow computer? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi there. My name is Mayan Viljoen and I am from South Africa. I am no computer expert, but this advice you can follow. Download and install Auslogics Boostspeed 4.1 on your PC AND THIS WILL BE THE END OF YOUR SLOW PC FOREVER! The product is from an Australian company and their motto is, guess what? "We hate slow computers" This program is quite simply excellent, and so utterly easy to operate, it is almost laughable. You have a 15 day trial period to test it out and afterwards you must make a decision to purchase the program or not. Believe me, at the price of $25 U.S., once off, THIS PROGRAM IS A GIVE AWAY! It will make your PC up to 3 times faster than it is now. After using this program, you will also never have to pay a computer technician ever again for repairs or whatever. I use this program in conjunction with NOD 32 Antivirus from ESET. With these 2 programs on my PC I have not even had one computer glitch in 18 months, not one, and a super fast PC. Enjoy!
Respectfully yours,
Mayan Viljoen.

SPEED

by Randy Walter - 8/20/08 2:45 PM In reply to: In only a couple of words . . . Auslogics Boost speed 4.1 by Maiyan820

Hi, Mayan ~ good post. I have a VISTA and quite frankly I don't see what everybody is specifically beefing about. I used to use XP at work with a 10G ethernet and my PC at home is just as fast or better. My upload/download speed is not particularly fast because I am using the ATT slow transfer DSL because I am too cheap to pay for an upgrade.
